Black women are the single most religious demographic in the United States, yet they are among the poorest and least healthy groups in the nation. Inviting furor and conversation, author Candace Gorham says the core issue is too much reliance on religion and the literal interpretation of the Bible.

Drawing on her own past experience as an evangelical minister, she infuses The Ebony Exodus Project: Why Black Women Are Walking out on Religion–And Others Should Too with raw, bracing honesty. “People–especially women–need to think for themselves. I was depressed and suicidal until I realized I couldn’t pray my hurt away. I had to reach for something more.”

Through interviews with African-American women who have left the church, Candace reveals a legacy of shame and suffering. Her book calls for everyone to honestly reflect on their relationship with religion and consider the answers they seek may lie within. Her website is www.ebonyexodus.com.

“Shift happens right where you are,” says LeGrande. Join the conversation at www.getboldtoday.com and share your personal story of triumph with the hashtag #getboldtoday on social media.
