The Secret Life of Fat - The Science Behind Fat Loss, Health and Wellness with Dr Sylvia Tara

FitFluential Radio - The Intersection of Health, Wellness and Fitness
Released on Mar 10, 2017

Sylvia Tara has a PhD in biochemistry and studied Alzheimer’s and Neurology. She also has an MBA and has worked with large biotech companies around the world. Along the line, she noticed how she was putting on weight which she found odd since her friends and colleagues weren’t having the same weight issues despite sharing similar eating habits. She decided to find out why fat acts differently in people and she has spent five years studying until she came out with her book called, The Secret Life of Fat.

Today, Sylvia gives us a good rundown on why fat is not just fat and definitely not something we should strive to remove at all cost. She also explains how our bodies are different from one another, which is a large factor when it comes to weight gain and how a person responds to a type of diet.

"We gain weight in many different ways. It's not just sloth and gluttony.” Dr. Sylvia Tara

 In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Fat is not just fat, something we have to remove at all costs. It's actually an endocrine organ and the body needs it.
  • Genetics, microbiome, age, hormones, gender, they all play a role in fat metabolism.
  • We lose fat burning hormones as we age and this is made evident when fat gets stored in places where our fat burning hormones aren’t as prominent.
  • The diet industry is filled with books and programs that encourage a one-size fits all approach when it's obviously not true.
  • Some people need to eat less than someone who is at a target weight naturally. You have to find a diet that works for you long term.
  • Leptin is the master hormone and controller in the body.
  • If you can't stay on a diet, you won't be successful.

 Key Takeaways:

  • People respond to food and exercise differently. If a diet or exercise is not working it doesn't mean you’re stuck with being overweight forever. You just have to find out what works for you.
  • Different diets work for different people. Not only does a diet have to work biologically, but also socially and psychologically as well.
  • Your body will do everything to keep the fat on. Don't think of it as depressing; think of that as empowering. You know what to do so use it as a motivation to help keep the weight off.
