A man went from the house of Levi and he took a daughter of Levi. 2 The woman conceived and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was good and she hid him for three months. 3 She could not hid him any longer, so she took for him a wicker basket and smeared it with clay and pitch; she placed the boy into it and placed it among the reeds at the bank of the River. 4 His sister stationed herself at a distance to know what would be done with him. Exodus 2.1-4
Amram and Jochebed, the parents of Miriam and Aaron, separated rather than bring into the world boys who would be murdered under Pharaoh’s decree. Six-year-old Miriam argued that they were worse than Pharaoh, for their “decree” prevented the birth of even girls.
Here are some things to ponder:
- her alterative choices.
- What if she kept the baby?
- eventually the authorities would come?
- What would she do if he was snatched out of her arms taken to certain death?
- Or wise to distance herself from this baby and let someone else throw him in the Nile? After all she had a husband and two other children to consider and take care of.
- What to do?
- All her choices were difficult.
