MERCEDES LAUNCHES EQB - THIRD ELECTRIC MODEL THIS YEAR

"Mercedes is ramping up its assault on the battery-car market with the launch of the new EQB sport-utility vehicle at the Shanghai Auto Show. Available with up to seven seats, the EQB debuts barely a week after the automaker unveiled its all-electric flagship, the EQS, the latter to serve as the battery-powered alternative to the classic Mercedes-Benz S-Class" reports The Detroit Bureau: " the Mercedes EQB’s dimensions are nearly identical to those of the conventional GLB crossover. But, like the rest of the new Mercedes EQ family, the new model mounts batteries, motors and other key electrical components below the load floor in a skateboard-like platform. The new model also integrates what Mercedes calls “Navigation with Electric Intelligence” which, it says, “contributes to the effortless handling of the EQB in everyday life. It calculates the fastest route to the destination, taking into account maximum charging power and the duration of possible charging stops."

"Due to go on sale in Europe and China later this year, the EQB will make its way stateside in 2022, targeting a group of competitors that seems to expand with each passing season. Just like the recently-revealed EQA, the EQB trades the grille of its gas-engined sibling for a nose cone with a glass finish" says Autoweek: "When it comes to the drivetrain, the EQB will be offered with all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive, at least in Europe. When it goes on sale there later this year the electric SUV will draw juice from a 66.5-kWh battery, giving it 268 hp in the 4Matic version and a range of about 260 miles in the WLTP cycle."

GM & LG ENERGY COMMIT TO SECOND BATTERY FACTORY IN TENNESSEE

"General Motors is expanding its battery-building base. Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture company owned by GM and LG Energy Solution, announced April 16 that it will construct a second plant for manufacturing electric vehicle batteries. GM says the new, 2.8-million-square-foot plant will cost $2.3 billion and create 1,300 new manufacturing jobs." according to Industry Week: "The new factory will be located in Spring Hill, Tennessee, where it will supply General Motors’ nearby Spring Hill assembly plant, which GM said last October would transition to produce electric-only vehicles like the latest Cadillac models. GM and LG first announced the battery joint venture Ultium in 2019, when it announced the construction of a $2.3 billion battery R&D center and factory in Lordstown, Ohio. That location is slated to become operational sometime in 2022."

POLESTAR 1 SPECIAL EDITION

"The Polestar 1 gets a limited-run special edition that wears a whole lot of gold in China. The company is making just 25 of them, and production begins later in the year. These cars wear a matte gold body, including the badges. The colour also shows up on the brake callipers. There are gloss black elements in the grille and portions of the lower fascia. Big black wheels fill the wings/fenders." says Motor1: "The Polestar 1 packs a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder with two electric motors. This setup makes 611 bhp and 738 pound-feet, which is enough for the coupe to reach 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds. The WLTP rating indicates the car can cover 77 miles purely on electric power."

KIA RECEIVES OVER 1,000 EV6 PRE-ORDERS IN UK ALONE

"The British division of Kia announced that to date (April 19), the company has received more than 1,000 pre-reservations for the all-new EV6 model in the UK. That's a significant number, considering just a single country. Together with other countries, Europe might turn out to be a bigger market for the EV6 than South Korea, where Kia received over 21,000 reservations on the first day." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The pre-reservation window, with £100 refundable deposit (€100 in most of Europe) will end on April 30. The first EV6 and EV6 GT-line will arrive in the UK in October 2021. The prices in the UK are: EV6: from £40,895"

BMW IX MAKES ITS WORLD DEBUT AT SHANGHAI SHOW

"As part of show-and-tell day at the 2021 Shanghai auto show, BMW was on hand to roll out in person the upcoming iX all-electric SUV for the world to see." says auto123.com: "The BMW iX is noteworthy for a number of reasons, starting of course with its all-electric powertrain. But the model is also the first BMw to get the automaker’s brand-new Operating System 8 and the latest edition of the iDrive system. The future flagship model for BMW’s elctric division is constructed on the latest, 5th generation BMW eDrive platform, also tabbed for use with the iX3 and i4 models we’ve seen previewed in recent months. The system is designed around two electric motors that together develop around 500 hp, and a battery pack with a capacity greater than 100 kWh."

HAWAII DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION BEGINS ELECTRIFICATION WITH TESLA DELIVERY

“The Hawaii Department of Transportation picked up its first electric vehicle — a white Tesla — on Tuesday as the result of an innovative service contract that is expected to help electrify its entire light duty fleet. Eventually, nine EVs will replace regular vehicles used by the State Highways division, with another 34 expected to be delivered to DOT by the end of May." says the Hawaii Star Advertiser: "Under the 10-year service contract, state and county agencies do not have to purchase EVs upfront, but can procure them, as well as the necessary charging infrastructure, on a per-mile cost basis."

VOLKSWAGEN EXPANDS ID. EV FAMILY

"Volkswagen is expanding the ID. family of electric vehicles with a GTX performance line. Volkswagen will show the new ID.4 GTX on 28 April. In Europe, the respective performance models of the ID. Family will wear the logo GTX in the future. Similar to GTI and GTE. The GTX models feature an additional electric motor on the front axle bringing the all-wheel drive into the ID. family designed for maximum efficiency. The additional motor switches on intelligently within a few milliseconds when very high performance or strong traction are required. In the new “Traction” driving mode, it is even permanently activated." says Green Car Congress: "Volkswagen wants to become the most desired brand for sustainable mobility. The goal is to increase its share of pure electric cars in Europe to 70% of sales by 2030."
