Conservative defenders of the U.S. Constitution say following the document is easy... just go by the words in it.  But the "textual" approach presents some issues, namely the vague and occasionally contradictory prose in the Constitution.  Legal scholar Akhil Reed Amar points up some of the shortcomings, and suggests ways to overcome them, in his book "America’s Unwritten Constitution."
