Come along for a visit with winemaker, Jeffrey Patterson as he shares his passion for producing award-winning wines and the winery’s fascinating history. Martin Ray was the first to plant grapes on Mount Eden back in 1942. Legendary grower and winemaker, Ray was inspired by, and learned his craft, while working for pioneer vintner Paul Masson on a neighboring mountaintop. Quick to pay homage to the winery’s direct connection with the early champions of fine California wines, Patterson continues the longest lineage of a single-vineyard estate producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in America. Jeffrey says, “My winemaking process is straight forward, using native yeast fermentation. After all, wine has been made for thousands of years all by itself. You might say our wines are vineyard driven rather than winemaker driven—the grapes dictate my winemaking style.”
