Alcohol is measured in units, and currently the UK Department of Health guidelines indicate that the safe weekly levels of consumption are:

• 2-3 units a day for women
• 3-4 units a day for men

Dependent on the percentage of alcohol contained within each drink:
1 pint of beer / lager = 2-3 units
1 125ml glass of wine = 1-2 units
1/6th gill glass of spirit = 1 unit
1 pint of cider = 2-3 units
1 glass of sherry / port = 1 unit
