Star Wars Droids & Star Wars Rebels - animated series John has us take a look at two animated series based on the Star Wars property. The earliest example of animated Star Wars is the first thing we examine, Droids. The latest example we examine is Rebels. The Star Wars holiday special showcased an animated short featuring Boba Fett and was the first foray in animation with the property. Droids, set about a decade before A New Hope, follows R2D2 and C3P0 as they bumble across the universe falling into one adventure after another. DuckTales - original animated series and reboot series Brian’s pick is one of the most memorable Disney television animation series. Based on the comic and character by Carl Barks, DuckTales follows the adventures of money obsessed Scrooge McDuck. The original series had an impressive level of animation for television and put Disney TV squarely in the front for viewers. Jules sure picked a winner this time... This is a tale of the rise of fascism and the blitz with a veneer of music and holiday magic.
The director felt that film can’t capture ballet so he avoided dancing, instead opting to shoehorn lyrics into the Tchaikovsky composition. I can’t imagine how they got Tim Rice to help with these clunky phrases.
The imagery is at times beautiful and often disturbing.
This is a mess of a movie, it is like 3 half-movies and the corpse of a ballet smashed into one, so that means it’s a bargain on Bluray from Amazon or iTunes streaming!
Honestly though try not to pay to see this, and probably don’t waste your time.
NEXT WEEK: We conclude on Christmas day with Dan’s pick Noel, a short animated TV special about an ornament that has a happiness.
