Show #694

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 11th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Lots of new Porsche Taycan videos hit the internet at the same time, so I'm guessing an embargo could have just lifted. The highlight for me is Jay Leno, with an almost 40minute video.  Also look out for DragTimes and Top Gear.

NISSAN LEAF EXPERIENCED A 73% SALES DROP IN JAPAN IN JANUARY 2020

"Nissan has a rough time these days as a company, because weak sales significantly affected its business. The Nissan LEAF model in particular also is not shining anymore. In January, LEAF sales in Japan were extraordinarily low - 753 units, which is 73% less than a year ago (2,833) and the lowest level for January ever." reports InsideEVs: "It's hard to judge what the year 2020 will bring, but it does not look optimistic. The cumulative LEAF sales in Japan amounted to 135,683. On the North American front, Nissan released a short note that - as in the case of many other manufacturers, it - "is moving from monthly to quarterly sales reporting in the U.S. market". It means that we will not be able to track the results more often than once a quarter."

MERCEDES EQS SPIED IN TRAFFIC HIDING SWOOPY SHAPE UNDER CAMO

"Although the B-Class Electric Drive and SLS AMG Electric Drive preceded it, the EQC will go down in history as Mercedes’ first mass-market electric vehicle. It kick-started Daimler’s newly founded “EQ” sub-brand of zero-emissions models, which is bound to include everything from an entry-level EQA to this – the mighty EQS." reports Adrian for Motor1.com: "The S-Class of EVs was spotted by walkoARTvideos on YouTube recently undergoing testing in Germany during a cold day, and while it still had plenty of camouflage on its swoopy body, there are still some details we can make out. Seeing as how the new Maybach S-Class has been spied with pop-out door handles, we’re a bit surprised the EQS in production guise will stick with a conventional setup. Making them flush with the door panel would’ve made the car not only look sleeker when viewed from the side, but probably slightly more aerodynamic and therefore more efficient. While the Vision EQS concept before it had cameras, it looks like its road-going counterpart will stick to traditional side mirrors. As a side note, cameras are already legal in Japan and Europe on cars like the Audi E-Tron, Lexus ES, and the Honda E, so we’re hoping the much more expensive EQS will have those as well one day."

NETHERLANDS WILL GIVE 4,000 EUROS TO CITIZENS BUYING ELECTRIC VEHICLE

"According to the RTL, a Dutch newsgroup, any citizen of the Netherlands who will buy an electric car after July 1 of this year, are eligible to receive €4,000 ($4,425) that can be used to cover the cost of the car." says beebom.com: "If anyone buys a second-hand EV, they will be getting €2,000 ($2,211). The country took this step to encourage drivers to move from gas vehicles to electric-powered automobiles. The €4,000 subsidy is valid on cars that cost up to €45,000 ($49,744). So the scheme mainly targets lower-end buyers of the market. According to the government, this will get drivers out of the gasoline vehicles and move them into greener alternatives. Now to prevent fraudulent claims of the grant, the car that is being bought must meet government standards and should be bought from a specialist/authorised dealer. According to the source, the Dutch government is also planning to provide non-financial incentives for the buyers. They are trying to give guarantees on software updates and EV battery health for the drivers. "

SOLAR IS BEATING OUT COAL IN AUSTRALIA

"Record-high renewables growth is transforming Australia’s electricity landscape, pushing out coal plants and lowering prices and emissions." accoridng to Bloomberg today: "Solar and wind output during the fourth quarter within the five jurisdictions that make up the National Electricity Market increased 39% from a year earlier, the Australian Energy Market Operator said Monday in its quarterly report. That helped cut power-generation emissions 5% to the lowest in data going back to 2001 and slashed wholesale prices by almost a fifth. Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s government has faced increased criticism over its lack of a coherent climate policy following the devastating bushfires that swept across the country this summer. Over the weekend it confirmed its staunch support of the coal industry in the face of a growing backlash against the fuel by giving financial backing to a study into a new plant."

NEW SOUTH AFRICAN LITHIUM-ION CELL MEGA-FACTORY

"The Megamillion Energy Company outlined its plans at the Batteries and Electric Vehicles Conference recently hosted by the uYilo eMobility Programme. Megamillion wants to be Africa’s first large-scale manufacturer of Li-ion cells and battery packs, in the hope of bringing down prices and thereby catalysing mass adoption of energy storage systems." writes CleanTechnica: "Megamillion hopes to leverage abundant battery mineral resources in the Southern African region and believes that by localizing the supply chain, it can produce cheaper energy storage systems. The chosen form factor is the cylindrical 2680 cell (a diameter of 26 mm  and a length of 80 mm) using nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry for the cathode."

DAIMLER OPENS 1MW CHARGING PARK FOR ELECTRIC COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Daimler has opened a new charging park for electric commercial vehicles at the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim headquarters.

Daimler Trucks and Mercedes-Benz Vans will jointly use the charging stations for its electric test vehicles. The new charging park will be a further step in the electrification strategy and connected corporate activities.

The innovative charging stations have a total output of 1 megawatt, distributed to two DC fast charging stations with 300 kilowatts each for trucks, and three more charging stations with 150 kilowatt output each for vans.

GORDON MURRAY REVEALS MOTIV URBAN AUTONOMOUS DRIVE VEHICLE

Gordon Murray Design and its consortium partners Delta Motorsport and itMoves are set to unveil ‘MOTIV’, a unique and extremely versatile autonomous vehicle platform at the MOVE 2020 show in London.

Part-funded through the UK-government’s ‘IDP14’ programme, the new platform breaks the mould for future mobility development by creating a cost-effective, ultra-lightweight quadricycle vehicle platform that is designed to meet full passenger-car crash safety requirements. Alongside its industry-leading safety credentials, the new fully-electric unit is targeting significant cost savings and improved refinement over its rivals, while delivering the range capabilities, platform flexibility and plug-and-play versatility required by autonomous customers with personal mobility or commercial delivery requirements.

MOTIV has the potential to significantly reduce congestion and emissions in city centres due to its fully-electric powertrain and compact footprint. The 1,628mm high pod measures just 2,537mm in length, with a width of 1,310mm.

MOTIV is powered by a 20kW electric motor, and will be equipped with a 17.3kWh liquid-cooled battery pack providing a potential range of up to 100km. It will operate at speeds of up to 40mph (65kph), making it ideal for operating in urban and suburban locations. It is equipped with CCS charging capability and can recharge from 20% to 80% battery in just 40 minutes.
