Exodus (Greek: Exodus-going out, Hebrew: Names/first word in the book) This is the start of the main story … the nation of Israel and its relationship with (striving / wrestling with) God. It occurs during the collapse of the Bronze Age of world-wide civilization 12-15th century BC). Hammurabi is emperor in Babylon and he’s the high water mark; smelting Bronze with Copper from Cyprus and Tin from Afghanistan, with world-wide trade routes that eventually collapse and there is a huge...

Gen 50 1Then Joseph fell on his father’s face and wept over him and kissed him. 2And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. 3Forty days were required for it, for that is how many are required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days. JOSEPH HAS CONTINUED TO DO A GOOD JOB FOR PHAROAH AND ALTHOUGH HE “BOUGHT” THE PEOPLE OF EGYPT ON BEHALF OF PHAROAH THEY CONTINUED TO RESPECT HIM. 4And when the days of...

Gen 49 Jacob Blesses His Sons … and prophesies about them: (NOTE the prophetic product of Jacob in this chapter is one of the most AMAZING prophetic passages in scripture! Keep in mind that when Jacob travelled to Egypt just 17 years earlier his whole family, including descendants, was only 70 people (Gen 46:27.) 1Then Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come. 2“Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob;...

Gen 48 Jacob Blesses Ephraim and Manasseh REMEMBER, GENESIS IS THE PROLOGUE/INTRODUCTION TO TORAH, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF AT LEAST THE OLD TESTAMENT, WE WILL SEE AMAZING THINGS IN CH 48-50 THAT WILL PLAY OUT MUCH LATER IN ISRAEL’S HISTORY. Gen 48:1After this, Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is ill.” So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 2And it was told to Jacob, “Your son Joseph has come to you.” Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed. 3And...

They are now in the land of Goshen.” 2And from among his brothers he took five men and presented them to Pharaoh. 3Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” And they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds, as our fathers were.” 4They said to Pharaoh, “We have come to...

Gen 46 Joseph Brings His Family to Egypt 1So Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. GEN 33:1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. REMEMBER, THIS IS A HUGE SLOW MOVING CARAVAN THAT JACOB IS LEADING … ESAU WOULD HAVE HEARD THAT JACOB IS COMING TO HE HEADS NORTH FROM MT SEIR TO MEET JACOB. So he, JACOB, divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two female servants. 2And he put the servants (BILHAH AND ZILPAH) with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all. UGH, IMMEDIATELY AFTER WRESTLING WITH GOD HE HIDES BEHIND HIS WIVES AND CHILDREN AND EVEN PUBLICLY DISPLAYS WHO HE CONSIDERS TO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT … RACHEL AND JOSEPH. 3He himself went on before them SO JACOB FINALLY PASSES BY THEM, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. SO, ESAU DISMOUNTS FROM HIS CAMEL AND RAN TO MEET JACOB FACE TO FACE … THINK JACOB MIGHT HAVE BEEN STARTLED BY THAT? GUILT DRAINS OUR FAITH … THEN THEY BOTH WEPT … WHAT AN INCREDIBLE SCENE. THINK ABOUT THIS SCENE COMPARED TO CAIN AND ABEL … GOD IS AT WORK. 5And when Esau lifted up his eyes THINK OF ESAU NOT BEING ABLE TO TAKE HIS EYS OFF JACOB UNTIL THEY RECONCILED … and saw the women and children, he said, “Who are these with you?” Jacob said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.” 6Then the servants drew near, they and their children, and bowed down. 7Leah likewise and her children drew near and bowed down. And last Joseph and Rachel drew near, and they bowed down. 8Esau said, “What do you mean by all this company that I met?” Jacob answered, “To find favor in the sight of my lord.” 9But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.” ESAU ISN’T INTERESTED IN MORE WEALTH AND HE CALLS JACOB MY BROTHER! 10Jacob said, “No, please, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand. For I have seen your face, which is like seeing the face of God, and you have accepted me. GUILT AT WORK … 11Please accept my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.” Thus he urged him, and he took it. SO, ESAU EVENTUALLY ACCEPTS JACOB’S GIFTS
12Then Esau said, “Let us journey on our way, and I will go ahead of you.” 13But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are frail, and that the nursing flocks and herds are a care to me. If they are driven hard for one day, all the flocks will die. 14Let my lord pass on ahead of his servant, and I will lead on slowly, at the pace of the livestock that are ahead of me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.” SEIR – WHERE ESAU / EDOM ARE BASED
15So Esau said, “Let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.” But he said, “What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.” 16So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17But Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built himself a house and made booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth. SO JACOB STOPS WELL BEFORE HE GETS TO ESAU’S HOME BASE AT MT SEIR.
18And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram, WHERE ABRAHAM WAS FROM AND WHERE LABAN WAS BASED – THIS HAS BEEN A LONG JOURNEY and he camped before the city SHECHEM. 19And from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, he bought for a hundred pieces of money the piece of land on which he had pitched his tent. 20There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel. GOD, THE GOD OF ISRAEL. WELL, WHAT’S THE PROBLEM WITH THIS? BACK WHEN JACOB WAS STILL WITH LABAN, IN CH 31, THIS IS WHAT GOD SAID … Gen 31:3Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.” BUT, SUCCOTH IS NOT THE LAND OF HIS FATHERS AND KINDRED … IT’S TOO FAR NORTH … JACOB DIDN’T FINISH THE JOURNEY.
