The Vanishing House show art The Vanishing House

DJ Mixes by Hardcore Math User (aka Orbr)

I’m delighted to announce the release of The Vanishing House, a two-hour collection of dark ambient and experimental offerings. This release marks a long-overdue revival of a beloved annual ritual: the Halloween mixtape. I’ve been too busy with these last few years to produce a mixtape as well, but this year I made sure to find the time. My first three Halloween mixtapes were (2007), a tribute to early goth; (2009), a love letter to asylum horror; and (2010), dedicated to religious horror and possessions. The theme this time around is ghosts and haunted houses. I’ve discovered a...

Pray For Death show art Pray For Death

DJ Mixes by Hardcore Math User (aka Orbr)

For my next haunted mixtape, I present a sonic swarm of blood-choked screams, growling ambient hellscapes, serial killers, the possessed, and the insane. Here to guide you through this drafty tour of the netherworld is my alter ego, Father Morning. He will hold your hand as you penetrate the inner circles of Hell, uncover the hidden blasphemies of Sodom, and maybe check out the basement of a local leather bar. (Don’t worry about it.) As before, I’m relying on the unwitting generosity of a diverse group of musicians and audio engineers for inspiration. Father Morning drew from several...

You've Been Sick show art You've Been Sick

DJ Mixes by Hardcore Math User (aka Orbr)

This mixtape is my love letter to psychological horror; to every abandoned asylum, possessed surgeon, and blood-splattered nurse to haunt the big screen. For this journey to insanity, I took inspiration from modern psychological horror, dada, and early industrial / experimental music. I really tried to turn the sick factor up to eleven. If you aren’t inspired to vomit at least once, then I’ve failed on all counts. (Some of these songs are available in standalone version for free on .)  Track list: The Silly Doctor - You've Been Sick (00:00) NON - Iron Destiny (05:11) Faust / Nurse...

Maybe it's the time of year. Something about the icy air makes me crave cold, funky, robotic drum and bass. This winter is no exception. Last week the temperatures dropped well below zero, and before I knew it I had dropped like thirty bucks at the iTunes Store on some of the chilliest tracks around. I mixed them all together, and now I make it available for you. The robotic vocals sprinkled throughout the mix are generated with a program called Speak To Me. I also used audio from the classic arcade games Galaga, Space Invaders, Q*Bert, and Defender. Track list: Lomax - Palomar (00:00:00)...

So far the Class of ‘93 mixtape series has payed homage to those early rave genres we all know and love: hardcore breakbeat, techno, trance, jungle, acid. This time the focus shifts to ambient, a genre that enjoyed a brief spotlight in the early 90s, both in and out of the rave scene, and easily deserves a mixtape of its own.

In 1990 Art of Noise released an ambient collection to critical acclaim, and within a few years artists like Future Sound of London, The Orb, and Aphex Twin were mentioned in the same breath as Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream. Raves had chill rooms and DJs found themselves spinning records from labels as unlikely as 4AD and Windham Hill.

Artificial Skies picks up where Lords of Ecstasy left off, leaving the listener floating in a cloud of analog soundscapes. The idea was to keep the chill vibe going, while moving in a decidedly sci-fi direction. The use of the word “artificial” was deliberate: with a few exceptions, the songs on this mixtape were made on synthesizers. There’s a great deal of very fine acoustic ambient music out there, but the point of this mix was to showcase music that makes no apologies for its use of technology.

One exception to this rule is the song Nike from the phenomenal 1989 album Deep Listening by Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster & Panaiotis, an album that was recorded, of all places, inside an abandoned cistern at an old military fort. Even though it’s an acoustic song, I included it in this mix for a number of reasons, including its staggering beauty, but mostly for the fact that it was recorded under an actual artificial sky. (That reverb is real.) Read the liner notes on the the Discogs page when you get a chance. It’s a fascinating story.

The Dan Harpole Cistern at Fort Worden State Park

This mixtape features music that came out in the early 90s, as of course is tradition, but the majority of songs actually came out decades before, some as early as the 50s (e.g. Hugh Le Caine). No matter the era, all songs share a set of aesthetic sensibilities that make ambient such a compelling genre. The result is equal parts relaxing, expansive, at times a bit unsettling, but always interesting. I hope you enjoy it!
