NISSAN ARIYA REVEALED

CCS PLUG

LIQUID COOLED

⚡ 63kWh / 223 miles

⚡ 87kWh / 310 miles

⚡ Both FWD or AWD

⚡ 130kW+ charging

⚡ 22kW on-board charging Astonished face

⚡ 0-60mph 5.1secs (e-4orce version)

⚡ OTA Updates

⚡ From £40k/$40k. Arrives 2021

What do the British Press have to say?  "The new Ariya features concept car looks and is massive technological leap over the Leaf, thanks to an all-new platform, which will be shared with Joint Venture partners, Renault and Mitsubishi. Unlike the Leaf which has effectively stood on its own, the Ariya uses a scalable platform optimised specifically for electric cars. Without the need to house an internal combustion engine, passenger space is elongated and the cockpit floor can be flat, with the batteries packed underneath." says car magazine: "The twin electric motor, all-wheel-drive Ariya models will feature Nissan’s most advanced all-wheel control technology, e-4orce. It has four-wheel drive and control. Nissan says the 0-62mph time ranges between 7.6 seconds (for the two-wheel drive Ariya 63kWh) and 5.1 seconds for the 87kWh Performance model.

What about the US media? "The dashboard has a pleasingly minimalist design that incorporates two large 12.3-inch screens, one for the gauge cluster and another for the central infotainment display. A simple row of touch-capacitive climate-control buttons are nicely integrated into the wood trim of the dash. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions are standard." says Car and Driver: "A more advanced version of Nissan's ProPilot driver-assistance system, called ProPilot 2.0, will be offered on the Ariya. It allows for hands-free driving in certain circumstances and can execute lane changes. Automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and other driver-assistance features are standard. The Ariya will go on sale in Japan first, sometime in the middle of next year. It will reach the U.S. later in 2021, with a starting price of around $40,000 that will likely reach closer to $50,000 when optioned up with the larger battery pack and all-wheel drive."

And the Tech press, let's look to The Verge: "Despite being tech-forward as it comes, the Ariya lacks many of the idiosyncratic (and slightly ridiculous) flourishes that Nissan likes to stuff into its concept vehicles, like a virtual assistant that’s also a koi fish, or a fake engine noise that sounds like a musical version of THX’s Deep Note. Still, it’s an EV, so it has to have ultra-thin headlights a la EV startups like Byton and Faraday Future, and brake lights that stretch across the rear like Tesla’s Cybertruck. The car’s HVAC system can be accessed via a set of capacitive haptic switches that are integrated into the wood paneling underneath the center screen that offer a similar feeling to mechanical switches by vibrating when touched."

The Pros and Cons from Push EVs

Biggest pros

Nissan has finally adopted CCS as its fast charging standard in North America and Europe.

The optional 22 kW on-board also demonstrates that the automaker is starting to listen to its European customers.

TMS (Thermal Management System) with active-cooling is finally here.

Different combinations of motors and batteries

Biggest cons

Bad efficiency. Nissan is still far behind Korean automakers when it comes to efficiency. The Nissan Ariya is even less efficient than the recently introduced BMW iX3… If the Nissan Ariya had the same efficiency, the 87 kWh battery would be enough for 541 km (336 miles) in WLTP, instead of 500 km (311 miles).

It’s at least a year away. This electric car will face really tough competition and its specs might not look good by then.

NISSAN TRANSITIONS TO CCS FOR US AND EUROPE

"When the 2021 Nissan Ariya launches in the US and Europe next year, it will come equipped with a CCS (Combo) inlet, as the brand moves away from CHAdeMO in those markets. The Nissan LEAF and the Mitsubishi Outlander plug in hybrid are currently the only two EVs available in the US that use CHAdeMO, and the LEAF doesn't appear in Nissan's future plans." reports Tom Moloughney for InsideEVs: "When Nissan brought the LEAF to market back in late 2010, it was the first mass-produces electric vehicle, and the SAE hadn't established the Combined Charging System standard yet. In fact, it wasn't until June of 2013 when the first public CCS charging station was opened in Wolfsburg, Germany. Also, over the past few years as Japanese and South Korean automakers introduced their new electric offerings, one by one they came equipped with CCS inlets. Kia's first electric offering the Soul EV used the CHAdeMO standard. However, in 2019 when the 2nd generation Soul EV was introduced, it switched to CCS. Kia also uses CCS for the Niro EV. Honda's only all-electric offering, the Clarity also uses CCS, as does the Hyundai Kona Electric."

"The eventual outcome of the war now seems plain, but the battles will drag on for a while. Nissan will continue to use CHAdeMO in Japan, where the standard dominates. Most new DC fast chargers in the US seem to be going in with both sets of connectors, though it’s unclear how long that trend will last." says ChargedEVs: "Moloughney also points out that the CHAdeMO Association recently introduced CHAdeMO 3.0, also known as Chaoji, which may become the new DC fast charging standard in China and/or Japan."

JAGUAR XJ ELECTRIC SEDAN DEBUT PUSHED TO LATE 2021

"Jaguar's been testing prototypes of the coming all-electric XJ sedan for a while now, an example we saw earlier this year testing in the cold having reached an advanced stage. The plan had been to launch the battery-powered flagship fastback this year, with sales to commence early 2021." says Autoblog: "A report in The Sunday Times says that plan has changed, Jaguar pushing the XJ back to the third quarter of next year while the automaker focuses on its finances and its most profitable models. The site FormaCar reports, "The presentation date on the official website now reads, 'October 2021,'" but we haven't found that XJ-specific page. In response to questions about the Jaguar canceling the XJ, a spokesperson responded, "Our engineers continue to work on the next-generation all-electric Jaguar XJ. We remain committed to our long-term strategy and our product portfolio remains the same, but the unprecedented situation will inevitably have an impact on our immediate plans.""

BIDEN PLANS MASSIVE ELECTRIC CAR PUSH

"Details about Joe Biden’s environmental plans are beginning to emerge, and they include a massive push for electric cars and trucks. According to Car and Driver, part of the plan is a program that offers financial incentives for Americans to trade in their gas guzzlers and replace them with efficient electric vehicles, but here’s the kicker: The incentives will only apply to cars manufactured in the United States." repotrs Clean Technica: "Exactly what “manufactured in the United States” means is not clear at this time, but it will most definitely benefit Tesla, whose vehicles can boast some of the highest US content of any cars sold in America. It will also be a boon to Volkswagen, which is converting part of its Chattanooga factory to make cars based on the MEB platform. Hyundai and KIA, however, who make some very competitive electric cars, would be left out in the cold. Biden’s proposal includes money to install a half million electric car chargers all across America as well as financial assistance to help car makers convert their factories to electric vehicle production."

SKODA ENYAQ ELECTRIC SUV SPIED WEARING DECEPTIVE CAMOUFLAGE

"while the Enyaq and VW ID.4 will share VW Group's MEB electric-only platform underpinnings, it'll feature distinct styling as it's the production version of the automaker's Vision iV concept the company revealed last year." says MOtor1: "Skoda is expected to offer two versions of the model – one with a single motor and one with two. The two-motor model could produce up to 302 horsepower (225 kilowatts). However, those looking for the most range will likely gravitate toward the single-motor model, which rumors suggest will offer 311 miles (500 kilometers) of range. Production for the Skoda Enyaq should start later this year. Sales and deliveries will likely begin in the first half of 2021. This will be one of at least 10 new electrified models Skoda plans to launch by the end of 2022 under its iV sub-brand."
