Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 21st July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA’S MASSIVE MODEL Y STAMPING MACHINE

"Recent images from Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai complex suggest that the installation of the Made in China Model Y stamping press is nearing completion. The photos bode well for the progress of the Shanghai based factory, as it suggests that trial production runs of the Model Y could indeed begin sooner than expected, perhaps as early as the end of this year. " reports TEslarati: "The pictures from Giga Shanghai feature a massive stamping press that looks all but completely set up. One end of the massive machine also included a banner that reads:  “Good fortune for finishing the installation of Giga Shanghai stamping line. With the installation of the Model Y factory’s stamping press in mind, as well as the presence of a sky bridge between the two production facilities in the Giga Shanghai complex, it appears that Tesla is now only months away from starting trial production runs of the Model Y for the Chinese market.”

TESLA MODEL 3 & MODEL Y WILL GET “UNIVERSAL” BATTERY PACK “SOON”

"In addition to some notes about the Tesla Semi battery and the Tesla Semi pilot production line “coming along,” we also learned this week that the Model 3 and Model Y packs will soon be “universal” — the same for both of them." according to CleanTechnica: "it appears they have been somewhat different so far. It seems that the differences come down to manufacturing improvements Tesla (and/or Panasonic) has made for the Model Y batteries. However, this only relates to US-built vehicles at the moment. The Model Y battery manufacturing improvements will be passed on to production of Model 3 batteries, presumably as Tesla is able to update the production lines, but none of this applies to the LFP batteries from CATL that the Model 3 that is made in Shanghai, China, uses. One final note from that tweet indicates the heat pump that is in the Model Y will eventually be put into the Model 3 as well"

TESLA SECRET PROJECT PALLADIUM: NEW MODEL S AND MODEL X ARE COMING

"Electrek has discovered a new Tesla secret project called “Palladium,” and it involves some important updates to the Model S and Model X. The project involves building new production lines for updated versions of the Model S and Model X. It’s still unclear how far-reaching the Palladium update is going to be, again due to Tesla keeping the information compartmentalized, but it sounds like it could be significant." says Elecrrek: "According to people familiar with the matter, the new Palladium update is going to involve new battery modules and drive units that are going to serve as the basis of the upcoming “Plaid” version of Model S and Model X. The new powertrain is going to enable a tri-motor configuration for plaid and feature increased performance and efficiency."

CADILLAC LYRIQ EV WILL HAVE ENORMOUS 33-INCH DASH DISPLAY

Cadillac wants to make sure its first electric vehicle gets noticed. With that in mind, the automaker has shared images of the gigantic curved 33-inch display that will cover most of the dashboard of the upcoming Lyriq EV." reports Car & Driver: "The electric SUV's curved 33-inch OLED display will serve as the infotainment system, instrument gauge, and control for lighting and HUD to the left of the steering wheel. Cadillac says that while the giant screen is separated into three individual displays, the entire screen can be used as a single unit—likely while the car is stopped and charging."

CRAZY MUSTANG MACH-E TIRE-KILLING MACHINE TEASED BY FORD PERFORMANCE

It’s called the Mach-E 1400, so-called because it has 1400hp (1381bhp). Thanks to the ever-expanding world of electric hypercars that figure isn’t as shocking as it perhaps ought to be, but the way this Mach-E achieves it will raise some eyebrows - it uses seven motors." according to Car Throttle: "That’s five more units than fitted to the GT, the most powerful road-going version of the Mach-E. Three feed the front differential, while the remaining four are arranged “in pancake style” at the back, connected to the rear diff via a single driveshaft. Powering the heptad of motors is a 56.8kWh battery pack, which is cooled while charged using ‘di-electric coolant’.  It can be optimised for drifty shenanigans (it’s surely only a matter of time before Ford-sponsored Ken Block gets his hands on it) or for lap time heroics. When going for the latter, the Mach E 1400 can rely on a giant rear wing, a huge front splitter and other aero devices to generate vast amounts of downforce, with 1000kg available at 160mph."

GMC'S ELECTRIC HUMMER COULD SOMEDAY SERVE ALONGSIDE THE HUMVEE IN THE U.S. ARMY

"Every civilian Hummer model traces its roots to AM General's Humvee, which made its combat debut when the United States invaded Panama in 1989. Fast forward to the 2020s, and the tables have turned. The born-again Hummer that will arrive with an electric powertrain and a GMC emblem could spawn a military-spec truck." says Atublog: ""[The upcoming Hummer] is a full-size truck with 400 miles of range and 1,000 pound-feet of torque, it's a very highly capable vehicle. That could provide a great base platform for an electric vehicle to be used in the military context," said David Albritton, the president of General Motors Defense, in an interview with GM Authority."

RENAULT TWINGO Z.E. PRICE EMERGES IN GERMANY AND IT IS HIGH

"The Renault Twingo Z.E., announced earlier this year, is a new electric model scheduled for market launch in Europe in 2020. It will be produced in the Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia, alongside conventional versions. The official pricing was not yet announced, but the Twingo Z.E. appeared in the latest edition of the list of EVs eligible for subsidies in Germany, managed by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA)." says InsideEVs: "The starting net price of the Renault Twingo Z.E. will be €20.831.94, which depending on VAT will be: 16% VAT (by the end of 2020): €24,165.05. 19% VAT from 2021: €24,790.00. That sounds a lot for a tiny car with a 22 kWh battery, doesn't it?" The problem with the price of the Renault Twingo Z.E., and other EVs as well - pointed out by PushEVs - is that at high incentives (in Germany it's up to €9,000 off) manufacturers sets relatively high prices, while customers will get the cars effectively much cheaper. The margin on the Twingo Z.E. (at a price two times higher than ICE) must be tremendous. The question is, whether it's the right way to go, because it's almost certain that at lower subsidies, the initial price would be lower, and more "realistic.""

OXFORD TRIALS ELECTRIC RCV

"Oxford city council is trialling its first electric refuse collection vehicle (RCV) this week, ahead of plans to replace all 27 diesel lorries in its fleet." reports Lets Recycle: "Oxford Direct Services (ODS), which manages waste collection for the council and local businesses, is assessing how the lorry performs collecting waste from household and business premises across the city. ODS claims the vehicle, provided by Warwickshire-based lorry manufacturer Dennis Eagle, is the first “purpose-built, fully integrated” electric RCV built by an original equipment manufacturer in the UK. The trial is taking place between 21 and 23 July. Maria Warner, waste and recycling services manager at ODS, described it as a significant investment and a major step forward for Oxford."
