EUROPEAN UNION AIMS TO HAVE 30 MILLION ELECTRIC CARS

"The European Union will aim to have at least 30 million zero-emission vehicles on its roads by 2030, as it seeks to steer countries away from fossil fuel-based transport, according to a draft document seen by Reuters. In a strategy due to be published next week, the European Commission will lay out measures to tackle the quarter of EU greenhouse gas emissions that come from the transport sector." writes Reuters.com: "That is a huge step up from the 1.8 million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles registered in Europe at the end of last year. The EU will next year propose tighter CO2 emissions standards for cars and vans from 2025, and the draft document says they could be expanded to cover buses.”

 

As I've previously reported, the forthcoming Euro7 emissions standard IS achievable with technology, more hybrid and batteries, but it's going to increase the costs for the car makers and could increase purchase price.

 

The German car lobby has already spat their dummy out. Then they called for synthetic fuels and hydrogen.

MODEL S AND X DELIVERY TIMELINES NOW AS LONG AS 17 WEEKS - WHY?

"For some people wanting to order a new Tesla Model S or Model X, the online Design Studio is showing they could be in for a long wait, hinting at some possible changes coming early next year." reports DriveTeslaCanada: "Rumours of changes coming to the two most expensive vehicles in Tesla’s lineup has been going on for years as the designs of the Model S is essentially the same as when it was released in 2012. One of the most recent rumours popped up earlier this year about a “Project Palladium” which involved new production lines for updated versions of both vehicles.  A refresh was further hinted at last month when customers in Europe saw prices of both vehicles increase by €5,000 ($7,700 CAD). To go along with the price increase, delivery timelines were also pushed all the way back to March 2021."

POLESTAR 2 IS NORWAY'S 2020 “CAR OF THE YEAR”

"the country’s Car of the Year competition unsurprisingly crowned a battery electric vehicle for the 2020 edition. It's not the usual suspect, though - a.k.a. Tesla’s Model 3, which has been falling out of favor recently. It’s not even the current sales leader, Audi's e-tron SUV." repotrs Autoevolution: "Instead, the jurors chose a model that’s thoroughly infused with Scandinavian DNA – the Polestar 2. The local experts decided the Chinese-built Swedish electric sedan was “a great joy to drive at a very reasonable price point.” Volvo’s attempt at electric vehicle supremacy is riddled with early adopter issues, while deliveries on the Norwegian market placed the Polestar 2 in a rather mediocre 18th position, with 1,805 vehicles sold during the first ten months of the year."

 

APTERA IS BACK WITH A NEW EV IT SAYS DOESN’T NEED CHARGING

"Aptera, the company that shuttered in 2011 after failing to secure funding for its three-wheeled electric car, is back with a new solar electric vehicle it claims never needs charging, at least, for most drivers. And it predicts its top model, with a battery of 100 kWh, can get up to 1,000 miles of range." says The Verge: "The new three-wheeled, two-person (or two adults plus pet, as its specs suggest) vehicle has a solar roof array that can provide up to 45 miles of range per day, so if you have that top model and add the charge from the solar panels while it’s parked, then the 1,000 range seems ... possible. Although, as Car and Driver points out, the vehicle isn’t charging while driving. The vehicle is curvy and lightweight, according to the images and spec sheet, and it has a drag coefficient of just 0.13 (by way of comparison, Tesla’s Model 3 has a drag coefficient of 0.23, and Volkswagen’s ID 4 electric SUV is at 0.28). Its front-wheel drive vehicle can go from zero to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, and its three-wheel drive model can get to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds."

 

And Tom at InsideEVs says: "At the 2:55 mark in the company-released Aptera video, we see what appears to be a Tesla inlet on the vehicle, with a Tesla connector about to plug into it.  You'll notice the connector doesn't have the Tesla name on the top as they usually do. Instead, there's a green overlay with the Aptera logo on it. We wonder if Aptera has struck some kind of deal with Tesla to use its charging technology. Wouldn't that be a coup for the company if its customers had access to the largest and most convenient DC fast-charging network in the world, as well as the use of thousands of destination chargers scattered across the country? Tesla has always maintained that it would be open to allowing others to use its supercharger network, but the cost of admission has been too high for anyone to take them up on it. We know first hand that at least two legacy automakers reached out to Tesla in the past to discuss a possible collaboration, but a deal was never struck."

 

We wait for an online live Q&A on Dec 9 when we find out more.

Why would a company which has an engineering prototype be given access to Tesla? Or is it from a scrapped Tesla?

BIDEN’S CHARGING PLAN COULD SELL 25 MILLION EVS

"the president-elect has a plan to install 500,000 electric vehicle charging cords by 2030, roughly a five-fold increase in the nation’s EV infrastructure that could cost more than $5 billion." says Houston Chronicle: "The 500,000-unit pledge was part of Biden’s platform when he was running for the job but largely overlooked in a grinding campaign dominated by the pandemic. Now, the industry hopes he’ll stick with it.   The infrastructure milestone would cover 57 percent of the charging that U.S. vehicles will need by 2030 and could spark the sale of some 25 million electric cars and trucks, according to forecasts by BloombergNEF. Right now, there are about 90,000 public charging plugs at 28,000 U.S. stations, according to the latest Energy Department tally. However, one in five of those is exclusive to Tesla; of the remainder, only one in 10 tops a car up quickly enough to be useful on a road trip."

 

Policy provides guidance for investment - car makers, charging companies, utilities, associated sectors. This is what China has been doing already.

UK WILL STUDY 'RANGE ANXIETY' IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING

"Britain's competition regulator said on Wednesday it would study whether the fast-growing electric vehicle charging sector worked well in helping drivers deal with "range anxiety", or the worry about not being able to find a chargepoint. Research showed range anxiety was a key concern for many consumers and ensuring easy access to chargepoints was key to persuading drivers to switch to electric vehicles, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said." according to Autoblog; "There are almost 20,000 vehicle chargepoints, up from around 1,500 in 2011, although more will be needed in the future as this is the only way to power electric vehicles, the CMA said. The CMA will look at how to develop a competitive sector while also attracting private investment to help the sector grow, and ensure drivers get the best service from chargepoints."

 

 

From the UK Gov website: "The CMA has launched a market study into the electric vehicle charging sector in the UK. We are considering 2 broad themes:

 

how to develop a competitive sector while also attracting private investment to help the sector grow

how to ensure people using electric vehicle chargepoints have confidence that they can get the best out of the service

We are inviting comments by 5 January 2021 on the issues raised in the invitation to comment, including from interested parties such as chargepoint providers, industry bodies, regulators, local authorities and consumer groups."

SOME CADILLAC DEALERS CHOSE TO CLOSE RATHER THAN SELL EVS

"The Wall Street Journal reports that about 150 out of Cadillac’s 880 dealers chose to stop selling the brand’s cars to avoid getting into EV sales. Costs for dealer upgrades may have been the deciding factor, but dealers continue to be an obstacle to electrification." says CleanTechnica: " Cadillac dealers were given a choice by General Motors: either pony up for dealership upgrades to sell only electric vehicles, or accept a buyout of $500,000 to $1,000,000 to give up their franchise. Dealers choosing to continue selling the brand need to upgrade repair equipment, install electric vehicle chargers, make other upgrades, and get training to sell what will become GM’s first electric-only brand. Now we know what happened — about 17% of Cadillac’s dealers went for the buyout option. According to the Wall Street Journal, many of the dealers that opted for the buyout were the smaller ones, and often had a dealership selling multiple GM brands. With volume of Cadillac sales only a small portion of their overalls sales, paying for major upgrades was definitely the most expensive option."

SOLAR ROADWAY FOR GEORGIA

"US smart city Peachtree Corners, in Georgia, has unveiled a photovoltaic roadway system which produces energy for a solar-powered electric vehicle charging station located at city hall. The solar roadway is located in a section of Technology Parkway's autonomous vehicle test lane and was financed through a partnership with The Ray, a non-profit organisation focused on clean transport technologies in the state." according to RENews.biz: "The new system at Peachtree Corners will produce more than 1.3 megawatt-hours of electricity annually for a Level 2 EV charger at city hall at no cost to EV motorists.

The charger is also equipped with an energy storage system for night-time charging. The solar roadway uses Wattway panels, provided by French company Colas Group in partnership with the French National Solar Energy Institute. The panels were engineered to be more durable and efficient resulting in a 21% performance increase over previously deployed panels."

1,000,000 PLUG-IN CARS SOLD SO FAR THIS YEAR IN EUROPE

Automakers have sold more than 1,000,000 all-electric and plug-in hybrid cars in Europe during 2020, a milestone in the automotive industry’s move away from fossil fuels.

According to the latest report published by Schmidt Automotive Research, the 18 country West European passenger car market consisting of the original EU member states prior to the 2004 enlargement plus EFTA member states Norway, Switzerland and Iceland, witnessed over 1 million new combined BEV and PHEV vehicles entering Europe’s roads this year, accounting for every tenth new vehicle, with one month of the year still remaining, in a total market expected to record just below 11 million new cars this year.

 

Half were BEVs so we're on for 600,000
