NORWAY: 9 OUT OF 10 CARS HAVE A PLUG SOCKET

"The numbers for the Norwegian car for 2020 is out. The share of pure electric cars (BEVs) has raised from 42.4 % in 2019 to 54.3 % in 2020. For the first year over half of all new cars sold are pure electric. The share of plug-in hybrids (PHEV) was 20.4 %. In other words, 3 of 4 car sold in 2020 has a charging socket." writes Jan for eMobilityNorway.com: "The four most sold car model was electric.  Audi e-tron with 9 227 car (6.5 % market share). Tesla Model 3 with 7 770 cars (5.5 % market share). Volkswagen ID.3 with 7 754 cars (5.5 % market share). Nissan Leaf with 5 221 cars (3.7 % market share). For December the numbers were even better.  66.7 % market share for BEVs and 20.4 % for PHEVs. This gives a market share of 87.1 % for cars with a charging socket."

 

Autoblog on why Norway is not a typical market: "Seeking to become the first nation to end the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2025, oil-producing Norway exempts fully electric vehicles from taxes imposed on those relying on fossil fuels. The policy has turned the country's car market into a laboratory for automakers seeking a path to a future without internal combustion engines, vaulting new brands and models to the top of bestseller lists in recent years. While the sale of BEVs had broken the 50%-mark in individual months, 2020 was the first time that fully electric cars outsold the combined volume of models containing internal combustion engines for a year as a whole."

 

And Automotive News Europe looked to the future: "Tesla's Model Y SUV is set to reach the Norwegian market this year, as are the first electric SUVs from Ford, BMW and Volkswagen. By contrast, cars with diesel-only engines have tumbled from a peak of 76 percent of the overall Norwegian market in 2011 to just 8.6 percent last year. While the EV market share will keep rising, there is uncertainty around how many vehicles automakers will allocate to Norway as European demand is increasing, said Harald Frigstad, CEO at Norwegian car importer Bertel O. Steen."

MAZDA MX-30 CONFIRMED FOR U.S. WITH EV

"Mazda's quirky foray into the electric-vehicle market, the MX-30, will eventually come to the U.S. A Mazda spokesperson confirmed to C/D that the company will offer the MX-30 in America with two drivetrains: either solely with an electric motor and a battery pack or with a plug-in-hybrid setup using a rotary gasoline engine." says Car & Driver: " In global markets, the EV version has a 144-horsepower electric motor powering the front wheels and is offered with a small 35.5-kWh battery pack that provides a short 124-mile driving range on the WLTP cycle. We don't know the specs for the plug-in hybrid, but we expect it to be powered primarily by the electric motor. Similar to models such as the BMW i3 and Chevy Volt, the gasoline engine will serve mostly as a range-extender that kicks in to charge the battery pack—only in the MX-30's case, that engine will use an unconventional rotary design."

TESLA GIGA BERLIN CONSTRUCTION IS NEARLY COMPLETE

"The construction of the outer shell of Giga Berlin seems to be nearing completion, and the factory is almost ready for the interior work. Despite the temporary delays in obtaining final environmental permits, prior permits allow Tesla to carry out all the necessary work and equipment installation in the Paint Shop." according to TEsmanian: "At the moment, thanks to drone recordings, it is clear that almost all buildings have walls and roofs, which are important for protection from bad weather and precipitation. The Drive Unit building has been fully completed from the outside, and internal construction work is underway to prepare the premises for equipment installation.  Today Musk shared a video of Giga Berlin covered in snow"

TESLA UNVEILS NEW MAP OF UPCOMING SUPERCHARGER STATIONS

"Tesla has released a new map of its upcoming Supercharger stations, adding many new planned stations to the network, removing others, and updating timelines in the process. Tesla has now released its 2021 update to the map – adding many new stations in the process, as well as removing some that were previously shown as planned, and updating the timelines for many more stations." reports electrek: "The automaker appears to have added many planned stations in key markets where its fleet is growing, like in California, the Northeast, in China, and in some European markets.  When clicking on the pin, Tesla gives a rough timeline of Q3 2021, and the automaker now says that those timelines are going to be updated on a quarterly basis. For some new market expansions, like in Eastern Europe for example, Tesla is not providing timelines, but new potential Supercharger locations are listed on the new map."

REVEALED: UK’S TOP RANKING ELECTRIC VEHICLE NETWORKS

"Zap-Map, the UK’s leading electric vehicle (EV) mapping service, is today releasing its annual electric vehicle charging network satisfaction rankings. The results, based on a sample of more than 1,500 Zap-Map users, show that Tesla retains its top spot as the country’s most appreciated EV charging provider, the network receiving the highest ranking, one driver commenting that Tesla’s service is “the standard all networks should aspire to”.

 

Dr Ben Lane, co-founder and CTO at Zap-Map, said: “This year’s network rankings should focus the minds of all EV charging providers. As the survey demonstrates, EV drivers are very clear about the factors that make for a good charging experience, with reliability and ease of use being key priorities.”

SMART TO INTRODUCE ELECTRIC ESUV

"smart, known mostly for its tiny two-seat cars, is working on a new model, which will be an SUV We guess, however, that it will be a kinda small crossover/SUV. The new smart eSUV will be, of course, all-electric, based on Geely's new Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform and produced in China for the Chinese market, as well as for Europe." reports InsideEVs: "It's expected that this new model should be ready around 2022, but don't expect the eSUV in the U.S., as smart retired from North America. Currently, smart offers two BEVs: fortwo and forfour EQ models"

DEMAND FOR BATTERY SWAP TO BOOM OVER COMING 5 YEARS

"China's new energy vehicle battery swapping industry is expected to experience a boom in the next 5 years, but there remain obstacles such as high costs and a lack of standardization, according to insiders. BAIC BJEV－one of the first automakers in China to carry out large-scale investment and operation in the NEV battery swapping industry－had set up 225 stations in 19 cities in China and had 22,000 battery-swapping vehicles on the road as of November." according to China Daily: "Statistics show that the construction cost of a battery-swap station is around 3-10 million yuan ($460,000-$1.53 million). Calculated on the basis that each station will have a reserve of 20 batteries and each battery is valued 100,000 yuan, the cost of batteries for each station will reach 2 million yuan. And that's not counting land, labor and electricity costs. According to the China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance, as of November 2020, China had 535 battery-swap stations."
