Our guest today is Tyler Kastelberg, founder of Bullpen, a company that connects commercial real estate companies with freelance talent. In our conversation, we cover a variety of subjects like the future of work, entrepreneurship, and the hustle and grind culture of commercial real estate. We also discuss Tyler’s journey and the idea of real estate as a vehicle for good - not just for profit.

Learn more about Tyler and his story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com.

“People are best when they work on their own terms.”

02:32

Tyler studied engineering because he wanted a career that had high earning potential. After finishing his studies, he landed a job at a bank in San Francisco. However, after a while, Tyler realized that he was very unhappy, so he quit.

Tyler has always been interested in the real estate industry. He decided to start multifamily investing on the East Coast, but raising money was difficult without any experience.

Eventually, Tyler started working as a real estate analyst and took on a few underwriting projects. This slowly turned into a consulting business where he hired freelancers for different commercial real estate projects. Around 1.5 years ago, Tyler created his company, Bullpen, which connects freelancers with commercial real estate companies.

“Our only true asset is our time. And that's an asset that is equal amongst wealthy people and poor people.”

08:46

Tyler is an advocate of letting people work on their own terms. He talks about how the current COVID era provides the opportunity to work more independently, and that companies should recognize that people want more freedom in their work lives.

When hiring for roles internally at Bullpen, Tyler likes to candidates a paid opportunity for 90 days on a live project.  After that, they can decide if they want to move forward, having had a hands-on experience with his current team.

Tyler is against the hustle culture in commercial real estate. He hires people to help grow his company and puts his trust in them, which in turn, has accelerated his business over the last 6 months.

The Final 3 Questions

  • What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?

To not compare himself with others. He’s always compared his successes with other people but now he’s trying to appreciate what he’s achieved.

  • What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?

Purpose and Value. According to Tyler, many people think that purpose has to be huge, but it can also show up at a micro-level. His purpose is to help his clients and their families and start a ripple effect.

  • What do you hope others take away from your story?

That you don’t have to be “perfect” to start your own business. Don’t wait until you have enough money, skills, or a clear vision. You just have to start somewhere and improve along the way.

About Our Guest, Tyler Kastelberg

After burning out as an investment banker and tinkering as a sponsor, Tyler founded Bullpen, the only freelancer marketplace dedicated to the commercial real estate industry. He believes that real estate can (and should) be used as a weapon for good and that people are at their best when they are able to work on their terms. Tyler lives in San Franciso with his wife and newborn son. Fun fact - Tyler has a secret obsession with regenerative farming - google it.

A warm thanks to Tyler Kastelberg for taking the time to share his unique insights and experiences with us.
