    • Imagine a school community in which EVERY interaction is supportive and positive!

At the end of each interaction, both sides walk away feeling cared for and respected, and with a clear understanding of the next step. We know a way that you can get there.

Here's what we are doing in Upper Darby SD to create this. We have been collaborating with the Center for Supportive Relationships since 2014 to provide relational skills coaching to our classroom teachers.

During a 20 minute real-time session, a Center coach uses a tablet to provide praise, compliments and suggestions to the teacher via a smart watch. The feedback is based only on relational skills. The goal is to support teachers as they build stronger relationships with their students. The Center coaches model strong relational skills with the teachers and then give suggestions on how teachers can model those behaviors with the students.

Currently, the Center is training internal UDSD staff to become expert coaches in order to sustain the initiative after the end of the 2018-2019 school year. Also, the Center and Neumann University have collaborated to incorporate a relational skills component into Neumann's first-year teacher preparation program. UDSD staff have served as guest lecturers in these sessions.

Feedback from UDSD teachers in the fall 2016 coaching cohort:

78% reported that they would recommend the coaching program to a colleague

73% reported that the coaching helped them strengthen relationships with students

65% reported that the coaching helped make their work more satisfying
