#1122: MM- Epigenetics and Obesity Risk

The Staying Young Show 2.0 - Entertaining | Educational | Health & Wellness

Release Date: 05/28/2019

Is it nature or nurture?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  When it comes to obesity and type 2 diabetes, science may provide an answer.  That answer is epigenetics.  Epigenetics is the methylation of genes—without altering the genetic code.  The methylation acts as a “light switch”, turning genes on and off.  New research out of Lund University in Sweden found that the number of epigenetic modifications made throughout the genome could be a predictor of a person’s BMI.  Even diet has the capability to affect gene expression.  Scientists have found that it’s easier to turn on epigenetic changes through overfeeding than dieting.  Even a 5-day high fat diet, altered gene expression.  Talk to your doctor if you have questions regarding your weight or diabetes.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
