The Devil Wears Prada is the type of band that if you didn’t know any better, you might confuse them for a career-long Solid State artist, with good reason. They grew up as fans of the label, started a terrific band, did the  first decade and a half of their career on other labels, and now, at last, they are in fact a Solid State band. So there is plenty to discuss and listen to including their new and debut release on Solid State, "The Act" which came out in October.   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD...

Chapter 23.2 Not only was Josh Moore focused on his goal of becoming a musician from a very early age, but he was also recognizably good as an early teenager who eventually was noticed by older kids at his school who picked him up and made him their lead singer. Finishing high school by an alternative program, Josh is touring as Beloved's frontman at 18 years old, and by 21 that journey would be over and Josh would move in a different direction musically and personally.   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS...

Chapter 23.1 Beloved’s 2003 debut, "Failure On," is a legendary album in the Solid State Records catalog. They had so much in their favor: made a flawless debut record, had an incredibly promising trajectory, had all been friends since childhood, and described themselves as family, were respected in the scene that was exploding and supportive, and were a priority to the best record label in the Christian heavy music space in the middle of its most powerful moment. Dusty Redmond gives his point of view as to how after just a few tours, and amid the anticipation of the entire scene for their...

Chapter 22 The guys in Emery grew up as far from punk and underground culture as you could get. Not until their twenties did they even find out about this whole scene. But they made up for lost time, and thanks to the foundations laid by the earlier bands, the explosion of this new scene, and the peak of the Tooth & Nail merger with EMI, Emery rode a wave of success and got used to it a little too quickly.   Emeryland: emerymusic.com/emeryland   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Emery...

Chapter 21 Dead Poetic is one of the bands that was discovered at cornerstone, and due to their hard work and dedication as kids, stepped into just the right place at just the right time.  The groundwork had been laid by the pioneers of the scene, the infrastructure was in place, and Tooth & Nail, partnered with EMI was at the top of the mountain.  Killer production, promotion, and exposure were no problem at all, and the specific sound that Dead Poetic had been developing was about to explode.  The band would achieve success, sales, and opportunities that...

Chapter 18 This isn't a Norma Jean episode per se, because of Norma Jean’s legend and significance in the heavy music scene. SolidState and Tooth & Nail history is much too large to begin to cover in an episode, so we will cover it from a variety of angles over time. But as far as Norma Jean goes, Cory Brandan is certainly a very central figure, and his career in this scene intersects multiple important bands and he is one of the very few individuals that has been able to find a way to thrive (although sometimes merely survive) and contribute for 20 years.  Cory has been able...

Chapter 17 Showbread is one of the bands that was able to follow in the footsteps of the bands who pioneered the music scene that we all love. There was a very special time when the market was not overcrowded with touring musical acts, but the scene was established enough that there was a great hunger for independent and expressive music. If you had a message, some talent, and were really willing to sacrifice, you could be a touring band. Even without a label or fans, you could get shows and win fans. And if you did that, perhaps a label would notice. It was a very open-minded and supportive...

Labeled: "The Stories, Rumors, & Legends of Tooth & Nail Records"

Chapter 16 KJ-52 is a Christian rapper who struggled to get his career off the ground in the 90’s after being rejected by his dream label and dropped early on by a major label and then found his home among the rest of us punk, DIY and hardcore folks.  KJ embodies many of the same values that we often discuss here but his music fit much better in the BEC and CCM worlds so he is a terrific individual to help us understand the similarities and differences in that world and the one we spend most of our time in. BEC recordings is the CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) leaning imprint of...

Chapter 5

Cornerstone Festival grew to a massive level by the mid 2000’s with Tooth and Nail day being one of its main features. The cultures of Tooth and Nail and Cornerstone were a perfect fit. The environment that they created was both the incubator and launching pad for countless careers and also a wonderful place of development for its attendees, staff, and volunteers. The festival did in fact come to an end, but it by no means did it fail.
