In 2008, 25 year old Ben Davis decided to start his business, and to start a business at the highest price point in the area. The economy was crashing, he had no experience in the barbershop business, his son had just had open heart surgery and he had no money. But he left a great job working for a great boss to do his thing, to be the business man he knew he wanted to be.

For several months I have been thinking about doing an episode about disruption and change in regards to companies like Toys R Us and Blockbuster. At first I was just going to do a tear down on why went wrong with Toys R Us but it was so negative I didn't want to do just that. I wasn't sure how I could balance it until recently, when I heard Ellen Barker the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Texas Instruments talk Texas Instruments. It was a story I didn't know at all.

More than 55% of jobs are some sort of sales job and more than 75% of educated workers end up in a sales job at sometime in their life. Also, when you take a look at many leaders out there, they tend to have similar or many times the same characteristics or abilities of great sellers, like being a strong story teller or having great empathy for others. Some people pride themselves on being a seller or in sales, but most don't even though a big part of their job is selling.

How many times have minutes and hours have you wasted on waiting on hold for a customer service representative? Then when you finally get to someone you get disconnected or they ask you for the same information you have already given while on hold. Or they transfer you to someone else and you continue to wait on hold again.
info_outlineThis week I sit down with Will Clevenger to discuss the 4 lessons learned from our different conversations this last week with the C-Suite, and as he continues his blog series dedicated to Digital DNA in the C-Suite. The latest blog he talks to Michelle Brigman the global director of customer listening and engagement for Citi Group. We look back to were Toys R Us made a major decision 17 years ago that is still haunting them today. Also, are industry verticals real anymore or are the lines getting blurred more and more with every acquisition and merger?
This idea of digital DNA. What is that thing that certain people have that enables them to be successful in this world of transformation? Is this DNA an innate skill or learned through experience? How is natural ability or skill, experience and digital DNA linked and were are they different. Can you really develop digital DNA or are you born with it? Does that digital DNA become sharper through Experience and could Experience and that same DNA be heightened with new skills. Is digital DNA that great enable of our time and what ultimately determines our success in this new world of constant transformation?
