In this episode of Logic: Life After Work, we meet Ellen Froggatt, a trustee of Ridgeway U3A, to explore the opportunities that retirement can create and the important role that community can play in this next stage of life. U3A, which stands for the University of the Third Age, is a movement built around the idea that learning and discovery don't have to stop when your working life does. U3A groups bring people together to learn, share skills, pursue interests and take part in activities simply because they are curious and want to connect with others. At the heart of U3A is the idea that everyone has something to contribute. Members can learn from one another, share experiences and skills, and create activities around their own interests. There are no exams, no qualifications to chase and no pressure to turn a hobby into a career. It is learning for the pleasure of learning—and for the friendships and connections that come with it. For Ellen, her involvement with Ridgeway U3A offers an opportunity to explore what this kind of community means in practice. U3A is also a reminder that retirement doesn't have to mean becoming less active or less engaged with the world. Instead, it can be a chance to decide for yourself what you want your days to look like, which interests you want to pursue and what contribution you want to make. Logic: Life after Work with Leon Daniels Logic: Life After Work with Leon Daniels: Moving beyond the Journey What happens when a career spent shaping how millions of people move through a city comes to an end? Do you step away from the pressure or find a new way to keep making a difference? In this episode of Logic: Life After Work, we meet Leon Daniels OBE, a transport leader whose career has been defined by ambitious projects, major events, public service and an extraordinary understanding of how cities work. Leon spent much of his career at the highest levels of transport and government. As Managing Director, Surface Transport at Transport for London, he was responsible for the delivery of billions of pounds of road, light rail and transport services, as well as major infrastructure projects across the capital. He worked with two London Mayors and played a key role in the successful delivery of transport for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, described as the most successful public transport games ever. But Leon’s career stretches far beyond TfL. Before joining Transport for London, he built and sold his own venture-capital-backed business before becoming Commercial Director UK Bus for a major international transport group. Along the way, he was involved in ventures ranging from Aircoach and Greyhound to innovative bus and tram projects, while developing experience across business development, governance and major operational delivery. Since retiring from TfL in 2017, Leon’s story has continued to evolve. He remains a Trustee of the London Transport Museum, advises and contributes to international thinking around road and vehicle safety, autonomous vehicles and the future of transport, and continues to work with governments, local authorities and organisations around the world. He was awarded an OBE for Services to Transport in 2019. But this isn’t simply a conversation about transport. It’s a conversation about leadership, purpose, reinvention, public service and what happens when an intense professional career changes shape. Leon’s experience raises an important question at the heart of Life After Work: when your working life has given you a sense of responsibility and purpose, how do you carry those qualities forward without simply trying to recreate the career you left behind?
