A Little Bit About Memphis Soul

A Little Bit About Memphis Soul
This episode is a throwback. We love listening to different versions of songs. In this episode we share a quick review of Me and Mrs. Jones, the classic hit by Billy Paul, and contrast it with the version by The Dramatics, a Memphis Soul group from Stax. Then, we talk Memphis Soul from the label HI Records that recorded such legends as Al Green. We also had a conversation with our friend Terry Ferguson (Prof. T. Love) from A BOWL OF SOUL -- one of our favorite people -- back in 2020. She and Steve had a great conversation about music -- each one adding their own dimension to the conversation. Just talking music, radio for African American History
February is African American History Month! In This episode, Steve and I have a visit from Gachele Coffey, a longtime Chicago radio personality that worked with Steve in the 1990s. They worked form the legendary John H. Johnson, the media mogul that created and owned Ebony and Jet magazines -- the first national magazines featuring African Americans. He later spread out into radio and television production creating Johnson media. Their discussions of African American radio, what it was like to work with Johnson, and their experiences producing radio shows are so appropriate for February, which is African American History month.
