On this episode of LE Tech Talks, research specialist Quin Patterson spoke with BWC TTA Co-Director Dr. Mike White and Sturgis, MI Director of Public Safety Ryan Banaszak about the use of BWCs in training with Tempe PD and the Sturgis, MI PD. Mr. Patterson and Dr. White spoke about how Tempe PD uses BWC footage in de-escalation training, and the different insights that BWC footage when looking beyond just use of force videos. Director Banaszak spoke about the different trainings in Sturgis where BWCs are used, and the changes in practice that have resulted from that use.

Throughout six months in 2016, patrol officers and sergeants from the Milwaukee, WI Police Department were involved in a randomized controlled trial. On this episode of LE Tech Talks, BWC TTA Senior Advisor Charles Stephenson sat down with two BWC TTA Leads, Chief Harold Medlock (ret.) and Director Geoff Smith (ret.), to discuss what law enforcement agencies should consider when selecting mounting options for their BWCs. While a seemingly straightforward topic, if not carefully considered, tested, and evaluated BWC mounting can place a department in a precarious position, as issues with mounting can contribute to missing important footage during a critical incident. Chief Medlock noted that being involved in the TTA program for the last four years has helped him understand there is no one-size-fits-all solution for a department nor perfect mounting location. Director Smith emphasized the importance of training and evaluation when determining which type of BWC mounting a department should choose.
