Initially working as a designer and animator, recruiting voice talent for his clients’ projects in London, he took the opportunity to switch sides and get behind the glass and behind the mic himself. Having decided to try voice acting he set himself up on the platform Fiverr with the aim of accessing some scripts to get some practice, to improve his technique and improve his delivery. But it didn’t stop there. He worked on other ‘pay to play’ sites as well as for private clients but he believes his niche means it works for him to stay on Fiverr. Booking the Big Jobs with August Black - Season 3 Episode 4
Authenticity in casting is reaching far further now than it ever has done and in this episode we hear from someone who can talk about this first hand. August Black is an American actor who is just finding his footing in the industry. With that being said the jobs he has tackled so far are solid steps in growing a long term career. August’s first acting role came from a music video directed by Dano Cerny, for the artist Wrabel, called “ the Village” which tackled a heart breaking story of a transgender teen in a un-accepting home. Being a trans man himself this opportunity sparked in him something never expected and pushed him to pursue a career in acting and voice over. In 2020 Xbox and DONTNOD released "Tell Me Why" with August Black voicing Tyler Ronan. Tyler was the protagonist of the game along side his twin sister Allyson Ronan making history as the first Playable Transgender character in a AAA studio game. The game was nominated for multiple awards and brought home 5 wins, including one for August, Gayming Mags best LGBTQ character 2020. In this episode August shares insight into his experience working in the industry and gives us his thoughts on diversity in casting and in video games. We hear about how authentic casting provides learning opportunities for people and more importantly inspiration for young trans people through genuine and sincere representation. We discuss how characters can feel more ‘full’ when the voice behind the character has lived experience and can empathise during their performance. August believes being proud and open is key to living and being cast authentically, to inspire others. You always just have today so make it count and honour what you need to be fulfilled and true to yourself. Are you ready to take your voiceover career to the next level? AI Friend or Foe with Rupal Patel and Ian Russell - Season 3 Episode 3
AI is a hot topic in the voiceover world. Joining me on a thoroughly interesting discussion are Rupal Patel and Ian Russell. Rupal Patel is the Founder and CEO of VocaliD, a voice AI company that creates synthetic voices with personality for discerning brands that understand the power of customised voice and for individuals living with speechlessness who want to be heard in a voice that is uniquely theirs. VocaliD is a spin out of Rupal’s research at Northeastern University where she is an internationally renowned speech scientist and tenured professor. Named one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative people in Business, Rupal has been featured on TED, NPR, WIRED, and in major international news and technology publications. Ian is a British Actor living in the USA. Back in 2012 his wife bought him an experience gift for christmas - A one day Introduction to Voiceover - 2 years later 2014 he started his VO business. He's now a multi nominated and multi award winning talent (including Voice of the Year 2020), he can be heard in campaigns around the world including a global branding campaign for Intel and the UK localisation TV Ad for Noom. He's an established gaming and animation voice - You perhaps know him as Locke in Payday2, The Psyker in Warhammer 40k Inquisitor Martyr or Igor in the breakout Indie Hit, Chernobylite. We hear from Ian and Rupal their perspectives on how AI has a place in voiceover. By applying your business head and not your emotional one voice actors have new opportunities rather than threats as a result of AI disrupting the industry and gaining attention. We hear how technology has moved on from the days of concatic speech synthesis and how resynthesis of the voice is done today with modern technology. Today’s neural text to speech is a new way of creating more flexible and higher quality AI voices with better tone and inflection. This also requires less speech input to create scalable AI voices. Which means a world of possibilities for voice actors! Having an AI built version of your voice means your voice can be used as a consistent brand element when you aren’t available, when you are on vacation perhaps, making it an element of the whole voice industry ecosystem and not the threat it's sometimes perceived to be. Ian and Rupal tell us about the opportunities presented by AI and how to capitalise on this advancing technology and the types of work out there. What Diversity Means Right Now with Edward Hong and Jennifer Sun Bell - Season 3 Episode 1
Edward Hong is an actor based in Los Angeles who has etched out a working acting career for the past decade on TV/film, commercials, theatre, and voiceovers. He introduces us to what is meant by the term “People of Global Majority” (PGM) and what that means for Ethnic Casting and Diversity in VOs. He is the creator of the that currently has 1.8k voiceover actors of global majority and 180+ production companies, talent agents, and casting directors that use the list in their search for diversity. He tells us why he thinks the genre of dubbing is one of the hardest things to do as a voice actor and talks about his involvement in the global phenomenon that is Squid Game. We get the insight on authentic casting for the series and how the PGM VO List enabled casting directors to cast dubbing actors of Asian descent and Korean descent to reflect the cast of Squid Game itself. It also helped with the performances ensuring they capture the subtleties and nuances within the cultures of the series. Jennifer Sun Bell is an award-winning actress, singer and voiceover actor who is passionate about giving a voice to the unheard stories of this world and of our imagination. Being mixed, Korean and American, she found there were so many silenced voices and stories that needed to be shared. A once shy girl who was once told her speaking voice was “not good” and that she should speak like she sings, she’s found that no matter your sound, if you speak from your heart, your voice will be heard and will make an impact. She can be heard as feisty Kpop Troll in Dreamworks’ Trollstopia on Hulu, bomb enthusiast Rin in Midwinter Game’s Scavengers, has lent her voice to many Netflix and Disney+ English dubs, Genshin Impact and so much more she can’t share just yet! Jennifer has also worked in film/tv alongside some of the greats like Jim Carrey, Don Cheadle and Kristin Bell and is currently working on original music. Jennifer explains why she thinks casting in an ethnically correct way is important and how authenticity is paramount in the increasing range of content from vastly varying cultures. We hear about her experiences in tackling Hollywood and making her mark in voice acting. Behind the scenes there wasn’t much diversity and that needed to be addressed. Jennifer shares why it’s crucial for all sides to understand the importance of having ALL voices heard and for the stories from the hearts of all ethnicities to be authentically shared and visible. We talk about the audition process and find out that casting directors have to audition for their jobs too! For Kate the best part of casting is being able to work with the actors in person at the auditions. She thinks it is great that actors can send in self tapes but she feels that this process can be very difficult because it means they’re auditioning in a vacuum. Kate talks us through the casting process from script to screen and she shares with us what she looks for when casting for the screen versus casting for a voiceover. Kate believes it is important to be able to make strong character choices and to commit to those choices in an audition so that the director can get an understanding of your work. We discuss the importance of continued training, no matter what age you are. Are you ready to take your voiceover career to the next level? Casting, Anime and Exploring Your Performance with Rawly Pickens - Season 2 Episode 6
Rawly Pickens is an established audio engineer, dialogue editor, voice director, voice actor and casting director with a huge list of credits under his belt including Dragon Ball Z, Bedevilled and more recently Moriarty the Patriot featuring our very own Rachael Naylor. Rawly outlines the differences between anime and video game productions and he relays the importance of acting and sight reading skills for both genres. He talks us through the casting process for an anime project - from writing the sides (the excerpts from a script that actors are given to learn for an audition) to listening to the auditions and choosing the callbacks. We also discuss what an actor can do to make an audition really stand out. Rawly proclaims that the anime world is exploding and the current climate reminds him of the indie film boom of the 1990s. He tells us why more people in the industry are using home studios to record remotely and how networking is now more important than ever before.
