237 - Hunting Arrow Tech, Kinetic Energy, Hunting vs Basic Arrows, and so Much More with Gary Cornum of Easton Archery
HuntFishTravel Podcast Episode 237 - Hunting Arrow Tech, Kinetic Energy, Hunting vs Basic Arrows, and so Much More with Gary Cornum of Easton Archery Summary In this Throwback episode of the HuntFishTravel Podcast, host Carrie Zylka interviews Gary Cornam, the marketing manager for Easton Archery. They discuss the different types of arrows and their benefits for bow hunting. They also talk about the new products for 2013, including the injection arrows and the Deep Six technology. Cornam explains the difference between hunting arrows and basic arrows, and the advantages of using a full metal jacket arrow. He emphasizes the importance of kinetic energy and accuracy in bow hunting. In this conversation, Carrie and Gary discuss the importance of arrows in archery and bowhunting. They cover topics such as flat shooting, arrow selection based on speed and kinetic energy, the design of Easton's new access traditional arrow, the physics of arrows including kinetic energy and momentum, and the importance of shot placement and penetration. They also touch on the concept of kinetic energy density and the minimum requirements for kinetic energy in relation to hunting different species. Gary emphasizes the importance of accuracy and finding the right arrow for each individual's needs. Takeaways Easton Archery is a leading manufacturer of arrows for bow hunting Different types of arrows have different benefits for specific hunting situations The injection arrows and Deep Six technology offer improved performance and accuracy A full metal jacket arrow is recommended for hunting whitetails from a tree stand Maximizing kinetic energy and accuracy are key factors in successful bow hunting Flat shooting arrows are designed for speed and a flatter trajectory, which is beneficial for longer shots and 3D shooting. Arrow selection should consider a balance between speed and kinetic energy, with shot placement being the key factor for hunting success. Easton's new access traditional arrow is designed with inspiration from Doug Easton's original arrows and offers a throwback look with modern performance. Kinetic energy is important for driving the broadhead through the target, and shorter draw archers may need to focus on maximizing kinetic energy due to their lower power stroke. Kinetic energy density, which focuses energy into a smaller diameter, can lead to increased penetration and is an important factor to consider when choosing arrows. There are no specific minimum requirements for kinetic energy in relation to hunting legally, but a threshold of around 40 foot pounds is often recommended for big game hunting. Accuracy and shot placement are more important than maximizing kinetic energy, and choosing the right arrow can help increase energy without sacrificing accuracy. Easton offers a wide range of arrows for different types of archery and archers of all sizes and skill levels. Covering 14 states in the South from Tennessee to the West Dakotas, Curt oversees the Outdoor Communications at the national level and is a key figure in the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers. During the discussion, Curt highlighted Toyota's commitment to giving back to the outdoors, exemplified by their sponsorship of events like Bass Masters, Major League Fishing, and support for environmental projects. Toyota's involvement extends to funding initiatives like the Bison Project with the Sioux tribe and sponsoring National Public Lands Day for 25 years. HuntFishTravel Podcast Ep226 - Author Mike Arnold discusses his new book "Bringing Back the Lions International Hunters and Miraculous Rescue of the Doomed Ecosystem in Mozambique" Mike is a Professor of Genetics and has written several books, the first 4 were more of the scientific nature, but the last book is a story driven by passion as a biologist, conservationist, mostly as a hunter and fueled by a non-hunter mentality. It covers ecosystem restoration and human community improvement Mike shares a ton of facts about Mozambique and its 1 ½ million acres that have been restored with the help of the people and outsiders to a middle-class level. It is historically heaven on earth for big games hunters. In the 1950's hunters and then civil war through 92 shut down tourist/hunters along with travelers. It’s a safe area now, especially the Southern portion. Crime is safer than in Atlanta, Georgia. He shares how anti-poaching movement in the area helped and reminds us that Malaria shots are still needed as a visitor. He discusses how the next book will be more on a global viewing of hunting dollar helping hospitals, community development and the wild game protein feeds the people. Mike’s book has received positive feedback and has encouraged him to write more books. Even a member of PETA remarked, they did not realize how much funding went back into the ecosystem renewal via hunting. Links:

“New Mexico Elk and Navigating the Draw Process with Jordan Christensen from The Draw” Jordan Christensen from The Draw stops by for an EXTRA long episode. Normally I’d break this apart into 2 or 3 parts to keep the under 30-minute algorithm happy, but the information imparted was so intertwined there was no way I could break it apart. So go work out for an hour and a half, head up to ice camp and listen along because this information packed episode is epic. Jordan shares his rise in the outdoor industry, and his journey from outfitter to taxidermist to hunting consultant for Cabelas. We talk about permit draws and lotteries and how he helps other hunters navigate the process via The Draw. One of the states and species we highlighted in depth was Elk hunting in New Mexico, he explains the difference between a $750 DIY OTC draw tag vs the $10,000 available landowner tags. And which one is right for you. He talks about what Guided Pools even are and how it works. Then we chat about how We are the Draw service works and the costs you incur by using them. (which is surprisingly low.) We talk about drawing tags, cost of, odds and probably a ton of informational tidbits I’m forgetting about several states and species. And in the end I ask him, “I have no idea what I want to hunt or where, what do you recommend?” And his answer surprised me. The state and specie(s) suggested were extremely doable. 218 - Sue Tidwell - Cries of the Savanna and an eye opening adventure in Africa
HuntFishTravel Podcast 218 - Sue Tidwell - Cries of the Savanna and an eye-opening adventure in Africa On this episode, I'm interviewing Sue Tidwell, author of self-published Cries of the Savanna, whose goal as a non-hunter is to make people fall in love with Africa. The book covers her terrifying, amazing, wonderful and scary adventure at Masimba Camp in Tanzania as a non-hunter. (She is not apposed to hunting). Tanzania is a remote area where the people welcome the hunters who give them the meat. The people never waste anything. They lack protein in their diet so they welcome the money (which goes for anti poaching) and meat the hunters supply. She explains about how hunting protects the habitat. They do not have the tools to hunt with, so they poison animals or set traps. She tells a story of brothers watching their herd who are attacked and his 2 brothers are eaten in from of him. She also writes about Lilian a Tanzian game scout who verifies all of her information in the book to be correct. It was a fascinating conversation about hunting Africa as well as the struggles a self-published author faces when going forward with a project like this. Links:
