Pre-Roman Wales

Pre-Roman Wales

The Map, circa 40 AD, shows the territiories occupied by the Brythonic tribes at the time. Our story takes place in Dyfed which is in Demetian lands.

By this time it was approximately 200 years after the death of Gruffydd ap Llewelyn, whom Gary wrongly calls Gruffyd ap Llewellyn in the Show. In 1056, he won another victory over an English army near Glasbury. Now a true King of Wales, he claimed sovereignty over the whole of Wales. By the 13th Century, the South was ruled by the Marcher Lords and the indigenous Brythonic Welsh who had retreated into the (Green) North of Wales. Later in the Mabinogi our stories tell us more about this area.
