Book Vs Movie Podcast

The Margos take a trip back in time when the social strata in America were restrictive in all aspects of your life from where you lived, worshipped, and mostly--who you wanted to marry. Our author this time is Edith Wharton who grew up in America and Europe in a luxury lifestyle with the top aristocracy of the mid 19th century.

Book Vs Movie Podcast

The Margos decided to go back to being a little spooked as we were in October by tackling the Henry James classic The Turn of the Screw (neither one of us had read it before!) Originally published in 1898, the ghost story has been adapted several times. We contrast this with the 1961 film "The Innocents."

Book Vs Movie Book Vs Movie "The Phantom of the Opera" (1925)

Book Vs Movie Podcast

The Margos had an excellent suggestion for this episode--The Phantom of the Opera which first appeared in a series featured in Le Gaulois in 1909 & 1910 by author Gaston Leroux.  Inspired by events that happened at the Paris Opera in the mid-19th Century, including a secret underground lake that was used for firefighter training as well as a chandelier crash that was a source of mystery at the time.

Book Vs Movie Podcast

The last week in September is “Banned Books Week” and the Margos want to celebrate by talking about one of the most controversial of John Steinbeck’s work-- 1937’s Of Mice and Men. Censors have attacked the story for its use of vulgarities (including racist language) and it is listed by the American Library Association’s list of “Most Controversial Books of the 20th Century.”  We pair it with the Gary Sinise/John Malkovich 1992 film.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947)

The Margos fight off the urge to daydream while we talk about the James Thurber short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and the 1947 adaptation starring Danny Kaye in the title role. Mitty is a character that loves to get lost in his thoughts and in the original story--he spends a day in Waterbury, Connecticut thinking of a few heroic episodes that star him and his incredible imagination.

The 1947 film takes place in New York City with Mitty being a magazine editor who daydreams while chasing a lovely Virginia Mayo. We have some thoughts about this particular adaptation.

So between the short story and the 1947 movie, which did we like better? Click on the link below to find out!

In this ep the Margos discuss:

  • The life story of James Thurber
  • The biggest differences between the short story and the 1947 film
  • The cast includes Danny Kaye (Walter Mitty,) Virginia Mayo (Rosalind van Hoorn,) Boris Karloff (Dr. Hugo Hollingshead) and Fay Bainter (Mrs. Eunice Mitty.)
