Sara Kamali, PhD is a holistic justice activist and a scholar of systemic inequities, White nationalism, and militant Islamism. Her writings and activism address how interlocking institutions of power oppress the many while maintaining systems of privilege for a select few.
Dr. Kamali is also the author of Homegrown Hate: Why White Nationalists and Militant Islamists Are Waging War against the United States published by University of California Press. In the first book to directly compare White nationalists and militant Islamists in the United States, Dr. Kamali examines their histories and networks as well as their self-described beliefs, grievances, and rationales for violence.
She also calls for changing the current counterterrorism paradigm in the United States to one based on what she defines as “holistic justice” in order to effectively counter what is now the greatest terrorist threat faced by the United States and by many countries around the world.
She also writes two monthly series, Activating Justice and Jessie Spano is in the Wake. The first focuses on the work of everyday heroes working to make their communities more equitable and is in an interview format. The second applies the lessons learned from Jessie Spano's time at the fictional Bayside High as an ally and activist to examine some of the same challenges we face in the real world today.
Dr. Kamali is passionate about striving against oppression in all forms at the axis of systemic racism, particularly ableism, the opportunity gap within education, and food and housing insecurity.
