#18 Daniel Klein Part 1: A Philosophical Joker’s View of the Meaning of Life
Release Date: 01/10/2017
The Next Chapter with Charlie
Show Notes The episode today is certainly the most philosophical shows we have ever done. As you will quickly discover, Terry Hershey and I do what I am fond of saying: “we go down deep, and stay down long.” Here’s the question: Do you believe something because, it is True, or is something True because you believe it? Is truth a matter of choice? Is there substance to the thought that… truth is simply a matter of whatever one chooses to believe? That is the question Terry and I ponder over the next hour. We had great fun and I hope you find your own truth in this...

Show Notes On the show today Producer Paul and I do a deep dive into the vastly ignored virtue of Patience. Typically, we just don’t do well with being patient. I’m reminded of the prayer, “Lord, give me patience; I need it now!” An interesting discovery in the midst my conversation with Paul was that perhaps the greatest obstacle to patience… is our natural proclivity for… selfishness. We fall into that ever so annoying trap of thinking that life is all about me. What I want (or perhaps feel that I need) almost always takes precedence over anything else. I hope you enjoy...

Show Notes I really needed this show today for my personal sanity. As you may know, I am hooked on the idea of awe and wonder. Today Terry Hershey and I talk about finding awe in the ordinary. Typically, the idea of awe seems to be most often restricted to some sort of event: like travel or museums. But in these days of Covid, travel and museums are no longer available. Yet, for the keen mind, awareness of the awe in the ordinary everyday aspects of our lives can easily be discovered. I really enjoyed this discussion with Terry. He truly “get’s” awe in ordinary. It was Einstein...

Show Notes This podcast is a thought-provoking examination on The Disappearance of the Nuclear Family. Our guest, Rand Sperry, above all else, is a dedicated family man. And in this show discuss we devote the entire second half to the value and need for family unity. In this time of vapid individualism, it seems we have put all our eggs in the “what’s in it for me” basket. So Paul, How about what’s in it for us? Rand Sperry gets very personal about his all-out commitment to his family of 6 children and 10 grandkids. And oh… Rand also happens to be a high profile CEO known...

Show Notes You know I think that some of our shows on The Next Chapter with Charlie really “hit the mark” And I think… This is one of “those shows.” Our guest, Pete Callahan built of one of California’s most highly successful law firms to assuming the role of Chairman of the Board of a fledgling charity. Since his commitment in 2015, that charity has grown nearly 400%. Pete and I serve together as volunteer president and vice-president of Wells of Life—a water charity. Pete Callahan is one the hardest working retired men I know. Wells of Life would not be where it is today...

Show Notes In this episode Terry Hershey and I wrestle with the role of spirituality and God in our country’s most difficult crisis in January 2021. Sometimes clear and sometimes bewildered, we remain at the mercy of our hearts, resting in the attentive mercy of grace. Truly, this is as vulnerable and as truthful a podcast as we know how to conduct. For those of you familiar with Terry and me, be assured: This conversation is most like the powerful conversations we frequently enjoy. Please find hope in these discussions as you listen to two guys grappling with the awkward life we all...

Show Notes Well today, Paul, our life coach Dena Crowder and I will wrap up 2020 by reviewing my personal year and then trying to determine “what essential life wisdom lesson did I learn this year?” Dena Crowder is THE best at digging deep into the inner self to help determine wisdom lessons learned in life. So today I will participate in a Dena Crowder designed Life Learning Exercise in which she will take me down a road to discover what wisdom I gained from 2020. This process is always so fun… and just a bit scary as the truth that emerges may be pleasant or it may be a...

Show Notes So Paul. We are recording the last episode of the year today. To do so, I want to have a chat with our friend Terry Hershey to talk about beginnings and endings. We will talk about TS Elliot and his poetry in the Four Quartets, especially the second poem, East Coker. Where he writes, “In my beginning is my end.” The search for today will be about knowing when to quit or when to “hang in for the next stage.” Now “quitting” is such a loaded concept in the American lexicon. Let’s see what Terry Hershey has to say about quitting and how it may relate to new...

Show Notes Hi Paul. Today we are reaching back to a guest we had on the show about one year ago, my son Austin Hedges. Austin is a professional baseball catcher for the Cleveland Indians. After nearly a decade of playing since graduating high school for the San Diego Padres, he was traded in late August to the Cleveland Indians. What I hope to chat about today has to do with both the inner emotional roller coaster ride, of ups and downs, family life, professional life and the place of dreams in the most competitive of environments. This show will be a “behind the scenes” view of what...

Show Notes I am very passionate about the topic for today. You see I have sort of an aversion what is known as “linear growth.” You know, the old 3 or 5 Steps to Accomplishing the Life You Want. I think linear growth is quite effective when learning and even mastering a particular discipline. But… even then, there comes a point when the novice reaches the Master level and at that time goes into a “free form” mode, using all that has been learned but now to freely create with competence. And so I wonder about the way we use the word “growth” in personal development....
info_outlineThis special episode is with a man I have admired for years. Daniel Klein. Daniel is the author of the book I regularly refer to: Travels with Epicurus.
Daniel, better known as Danny, is a New York Times Best Selling author, for a book written with his friend Tom Cathcart, titled When Plato and a Plautus Walk Into a Bar. It’s a book about philosophy; but it’s philosophy explained by jokes!! And good jokes at that. Several times I was caught in public laughing out load as I read the book.
Danny is a very, very funny guy, astute philosopher, but mostly, for me, he is a man on a never-ending quest to make sense of “the meaning of life.”
Today we will spend much of our time discussing Danny’s latest book: “Every Time I Find the Meaning of Life, They Change it!)
But as you know with me, I really had no idea where our conversation would end up. It was funny, wild, and enormously informing.
Don’ miss Danny!!!
