The Next Chapter with Charlie

My guest today is Chris Avery. With a humble but steadily growing community of 5,000 Christian men, Chris Avery brings a grounded voice to topics like discipline, fatherhood, and the gritty side of spiritual growth. Chris wasn’t born with unshakeable confidence. He’s walked through the valley of fear, experienced doubt, and rebuilt himself one mile at a time (which we will talk about more as the show proceeds). Chris has coached more than a thousand people, helping men find clarity, resilience, and deeper identity in Christ.  Let’s find out more as we bring Chris Avery on the show!

The Next Chapter with Charlie

My guest today is friend and poet Steve Garnass-Holmes.   Steve Garnass-Holmes’s life is rich in thought and in experience. Talking to Steve is like talking to a writer of wisdom literature. Today we will begin the show by addressing the question, “What does it really mean to follow Jesus?” Is it a heart or head issue? The heart says to love while the head becomes laden with thoughts of being right. But there is really only one way to be right and that is To Love. Steve Garnass-Holmes will challenge what you may believe and then encourage you with one simple truth. Let’s find out...

Show Notes  Welcome friends to the Next Chapter with Charlie. On a recent blog I wrote the following note… “On my last trip (3 weeks in Asia), I discovered a new mantra for taking time away from home. “I no longer go on vacations to sight-see. Instead, I take pilgrimages to experience wonder.” What if I made that my mantra for every single day? “Anticipate little except moments of surprise and wonder.” And so with this, I chat with author, teacher, and landscape architect, Terry Hershy. LINKS You can find out much more about Terry and his post Sabbath Moment .

Show Notes

As you know, I have been highly impacted by a book from Richard Rohr titled Falling Upward. In this book Rohr emphasizes the distinctive transition from 1st to 2nd Half of Life. In short, the first half is generally triggered primarily by an ego-driven focus of building up your needs for self-esteem and self-importance, which are often referred to ego-driven needs. Rohr points out that this is a most important and necessary part of life because it establishes the confidence and credentials to proceed to vastly meaningful life.

The 2nd half is a transition that most often occurs in in the latter third of life, generally becoming apparent more in the 60’s and early 70’s. We used to call it growing old gracefully but I think it entails so much more. In the 2nd half we can find that we are much less obsessed with building up the ego. We somehow discover contentment with ourselves and find the desire to focus more on soul enriching activities such as service and a willingness to build relationships with people of like-mindedness.

Today Producer Paul and I will banter about the precepts involved in primarily the 2nd half of life as we also explore the more common ego-driven approach of the 1st half.
