Scripture & Story

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are celebrating my birthday by talking about cultivating a meaningful and Christ-honoring life.   So often we move from one day to the next, simply doing the next thing, with very little thought to what we want our lives to be about. We are reactionary instead of proactive. We let life happen to us instead of designing a life that includes all the best things God wants for us. We either drift aimlessly or we are frantically driven for some version of the perfect life that remains just beyond our grasp.   I don’t know about...

#72 Three Little Words That Pack a Punch show art #72 Three Little Words That Pack a Punch

Scripture & Story

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are going to camp out on three little words that pack a punch. The phrase “how much more” is repeated several times in Scripture. And when I first came across this phrase, I was intrigued to find the answer to the question in each case. How much more?   We use this phrase in everyday conversations, and it flits through our minds in our internal dialogue. And if you think about it, we are often able to answer this question with specific numbers. But Scripture speaks of a different answer. Let’s find out together what it is....

#71 God delights in you. He really does. show art #71 God delights in you. He really does.

Scripture & Story

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are going to explore Scriptures that describe how God feels towards us.   I’ve been on a little journey in recent months to fully grasp the wonder of the reality that God delights in me. And He delights in you too. Find that hard to believe? I totally understand. But He does. God delights in you.    This truth is not only theologically accurate, but it’s wonderfully personal. The God of the universe, who flung galaxies into space and breathed out stars, looks down on your life and smiles with pleasure. Let’s talk...

Scripture & Story

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are acknowledging the transition from the lazy days of summer to the routines of September, and in honour of this change in season, I am going to share with you 100 lessons I learned this summer.   Some of these are light and fun and give you a glimpse into my life, and others are much deeper, the kind of lessons that are hard-earned. My hope is that you will begin to think about the lessons God is teaching you in this season on your life and perhaps record them somewhere or share them with a friend.   We never stop learning....

#69 7 Ways to Stay Spiritually Strong this Summer show art #69 7 Ways to Stay Spiritually Strong this Summer

Scripture & Story

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are going to talk about seven ways to stay spiritually strong this summer. Summer is the season of rest and unplugging from normal commitments. But in the lazy, hazy days of summer, we can become passive about our spiritual lives.   But what if this summer we decided together to invest in our relationship with Jesus? What if we used the extra time we’ve gained in our schedules to pursue Christ in a deeper way? I think this is quite possible even while the pace of life slows a little.   I want to come to the end of the summer...

#68 15 Tips for Memorizing Scripture show art #68 15 Tips for Memorizing Scripture

Scripture & Story

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, I am going to give you 15 tips for memorizing Scripture.   Memorizing Scripture is a spiritual discipline that offers huge rewards, yet many of us find it difficult to get into the habit. In my own life, memorizing the Bible has been the single-most practice that has yielded the highest fruit. There is something about hiding God’s Word in our hearts that leads us to understand it in a deeper way. It’s like the Spirit brings revelation as we memorize. Let’s talk about memorizing Scripture!   So grab a cup of coffee, your...

Scripture & Story

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are finishing our three-part mini-series on our identity in Christ. This series is called Who Am I: Conquering the Lies and Embracing the Truth.   As Christians, our identity is in Christ alone. We need a biblical understanding of identity because if we don’t know who we are in Christ, the world is quick fill in the gaps for us. The problem is, who the world tells us we are, is not based on truth.    In our time we are talking about nine lies we are tempted to believe about our identity and the corresponding truth we are...

Scripture & Story

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are in the middle of our three-part mini-series on our identity in Christ. This series is called Who Am I: Conquering the Lies and Embracing the Truth.   All of us struggle with identity at one time or another. We wrestle with who we are and what we are called to do. We need something stable - something unchanging - to place our identities in. That something is a Someone – Jesus Christ.   In our time we are talking about nine lies we are tempted to believe about our identity and the corresponding truth we are invited to...

Scripture & Story

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are launching a three-part mini-series on our identity in Christ. I am calling this series Who Am I: Conquering the Lies and Embracing the Truth.   All of us struggle with identity at one time or another. We wrestle with who we are and what we are called to do. In certain seasons we allow roles to define us – roles like employee, wife, mother, friend, or sister. We can also allow where we live, how we serve in the church, where we vacation, our extended families or our college degree to define us. The problem with placing our...

#64 When You Long for God to Do a New Thing show art #64 When You Long for God to Do a New Thing

Scripture & Story

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are going to talk about God’s desire to make all things new.   We all have seasons where there are areas of our lives that feel stagnant, stale, old, tired or lifeless. In those seasons we desperately need God to do something new. We need His life-giving power, His renewing miraculous works, His reinvigorating presence. Our God can breathe fresh life into dead places. He is able to create something out of nothing.   So as we look out over the valley of dry bones in our lives, so to speak, and ask the same question Ezekiel...

More Episodes

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah, using my brand-new Bible study called A Coming King.

In our passage today, we are brought face-to-face with our ongoing tendency to turn created things into idols. You see, we were made to worship, and if we don’t worship the God of the universe, we will inevitably worship something or someone else. If not submitted to Christ, our hearts become little idol factories. Certainly, idols in our day are far more sophisticated and sneaky than the ancient wooden statue versions, but they are no less present. You and I must learn how to recognize and eradicate idols from our hearts. I am going to share four tests we can use to determine if something has reached idol status in our lives.

We also talk about the Babylonian mentality in this episode. This ancient way of thinking has invaded our culture, and you may be surprised to find it has made its way into your thinking as well.

So, be warned, this episode is nothing short of convicting. I’m betting the Holy Spirit will step all over your toes as He has been doing with me, all with the view of making us more like Christ.

So grab a cup of coffee, your Bible, and your Isaiah Bible Study and join me on the pages of God’s Word.
