EX 13 CONSECRATION OF THE FIRSTBORN TIED DIRECTLY TO THE PASSOVER

1The Lord said to Moses, 2“Consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.” THE FIRSTBORN SON WAS CRITICAL IN THE ANCIENT WORLD TO ENSURE THE SURVIVAL OF THE PARENTS INTO OLD AGE. THE FATHER’S LEGACY, WHAT HE BUILT THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE, WAS PASSED ON TO THE FIRSTBORN. ALSO, WOMEN WHO SURVIVED CHILDBIRTH TENDED TO OUTLIVE THEIR HUSBANDS SO THE FIRSTBORN WAS EXPECTED TO CARE FOR HIS WIDOWED MOTHER (THE WIDOW OF NAIN Lk 7:11Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” 14Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” 15The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” 17This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country) BACK TO EX 13, SO, THE FIRSTBORN SON WAS THE KEY TO THE SURVIVAL OF THE FAMILY, WHEN GOD TELLS THE ISRAELITES THAT EVERY FIRSTBORN BELONGS TO HIM … HE’S TELLING THEM TO FOCUS ON HIM/YAHWEH, AND NOT THEIR EARTHLY CIRCUMSTANCES … THAT’S ONE OF THE KEYS TO JESUS BEING CALLED THE “FIRSTBORN” … HE’S THE ONE WHO ENSURES OUR FUTURES.

GOD HAD ALSO COMMANDED THAT THE FIRSTBORN ANIMALS ALSO BELONGED TO HIM … WEALTH WAS MEASURED IN THE SIZE OF YOUR FLOCK, NOT ALL ANIMALS LIVED TO ADULTHOOD, SO, HAVING TO SURRENDER YOUR FIRSTBORN ANIMALS TO GOD MEANT YOU WERE GIVING HIM A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF YOUR WEALTH … FURTHER DEMONSTRATION OF HOW RELIANT YOU WERE TO BE ON YAHWEH … ATTACH YOUR FAITH TO THIS SACRIFICE.

3Then Moses said to the people, “Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand/ARM. COMPARED TO THE RIGHT ARM OF PHAROAH, OR THE RIGHT HAND/ARM OF THE CHIEF EGYPTIAN GOD, RA … Eat nothing containing yeast. 4Today, in the month of Aviv (AKA Nisan, March/April … the first month of the Hebrew calendar) you are leaving. 5When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites—the land he swore to your ancestors to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey—you are to observe this ceremony in this month: 6For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival to the Lord. 7Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders. SO THERE IS A WEEK LEADING UP TO THE PASSOVER DURING WHICH YOU CAN NOT EAT YEAST, THAT’S WHY PASSOVER IS REFERRED TO AS THE FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD … UNLEAVENED BECAUSE THEY HAD TO LEAVE IN A HURRY AND THE BREAD DIDN’T HAVE TIME TO RISE … 8On that day tell your son, ‘I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ THAT’S HOW ALL FUTURE ISRAELITES THROUGHOUT HISTORY WERE TO REFER TO THIS; “WHAT GOD DID FOR ME” SO, ALL FUTURE GENERATIONS WERE TIED TO THIS ORIGINAL EVENT IN EGYPT, BEING SET FREE FROM SLAVERY, THROUGH THE YEARLY OBSERVANCE OF THE FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD WHICH CULMINATES IN EATING THE PASSOVER LAMB

Jn 6:53Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day SO, WHEN WE EAT THE COMMUNION BREAD WE ARE ALSO TIED DIRECTLY BACK TO THE SACRIFICE CHRIST MADE ON THE CROSS FOR US 2,000 YEARS AGO.

9This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand. 10You must keep this ordinance at the appointed time year after year.

11“After the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites and gives it to you, as he promised on oath to you and your ancestors, 12you are to give over to the Lord the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the Lord. 13Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. DONKEYS WERE UNCLEAN, YOU DON’T SACRIFICE UNCLEAN ANIMALS, SO, THEY WERE REPLACED WITH CLEAN ANIMALS IF YOU WANTED TO KEEP THE UNCLEAN ANIMAL … DONKEYS WERE DOMESTICATED BEASTS OF BURDEN AND VALUABLE. Redeem every firstborn among your sons. YOU DIDN’T KILL YOUR FIRSTBORN SONS, YOU PAID A PRICE TO “BUY THEM BACK” OR REDEEM THEM FROM GOD.

14“In days to come, when your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.’ 16And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.” MIGHTY HAND/ARM, IT WAS AN ACTUAL PHYSICAL EVENT … GOD’S MIRACULOUS PLAGUES ON THE EGYPTIANS … THIS ISN’T JUST SOME VAGUE SPIRITUAL EVENT … IT’S TIED TO SOMETHING GOD ACTUALLY DID IN EGYPT … THE SAME PRINCIPAL APPLIES TO JESUS … HE ACTUALLY LIVED AND DIED AND OUR SPIRITUAL LIVES ARE TIED TO THOSE ACTUAL HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT LED TO THE CRUCIFIXION AND RESURRECTION.

Crossing the Sea

17When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” GOD IS SOVEREIGN, HOWEVER, THIS IS A CLEAR STATEMENT OF “FREE WILL” … “THEY MIGHT CHANGE THEIR MINDS” GOD CONTROLS ALL CIRCUMSTANCES, HOWEVER, THE REACTIONS OF THE ISRAELITES WERE NOT PREDETERMINED BY GOD 18So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.

19Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”

20After leaving Sukkoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert. 21By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

THEOPHANIC GLORY CLOUD … THE PRESENCE OF GOD, AT NIGHT IT WAS MORE LIKE A GLOWING, RADIANT CLOUD AND NOT LIKE A BLOWTORCH. THINK OF THE CLOUD THAT ENVELOPED JESUS, MOSES, ELIJAH, PETER, JAMES AND JOHN DURING THE TRANSFIGURATION, AND THE CLOUD THAT ENVELOPED THE TEMPLE WHEN SOLOMON DEDICATED IT, AND THE CLOUD THAT WOULD ENVELOPE THE TENT OF MEETING WHEN MOSES WAS MEETING WITH GOD.
