Exodus Chapter 14 Deep-Dive: The Crossing of the Red Sea

EX 14

1Then the Lord said to Moses, 2“Tell the people of Israel to turn back and encamp in front of Pi-hahiroth (MOUTH OF WATER), between Migdol (TOWER, ex LIGHTHOUSE?) and the sea, in front of Baal-zephon (BAAL OF THE NORTH); you shall encamp facing it, by the sea. BOTTOM LINE IS THAT WE DON’T KNOW EXACTLY WHERE THIS WAS … THE SAME THEME WE’VE SEEN IN EXODUS … WE DON’T KNOW EXACTLY WHICH PHAROAH, AND WE’RE NOT EXACTLY SURE OF THE LOCATIONS … IF GOD WANTED US TO KNOW, WE WOULD KNOW, REMEMBER, THIS IS TAKING PLACE SOMETIME BETWEEN 966 {1 Ki 6:1 480 yrs before Solomon’s temple} -1450 BC … REMEMBER THAT TRANSLATING NUMBERS FROM HEBREW IS VERY DIFFICULT AND IMPRECISE … BACK TO GOD SPEAKING WITH MOSES … 3For Pharaoh will say of the people of Israel, ‘They are wandering in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.’ 4And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord.” And they did so.

5When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the mind of Pharaoh and his servants was changed toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?” ANOTHER QUICK CHANGE OF MIND FOR PHAROAH ... AND HIS SERVANTS 6So he PHAROAH made ready his chariot and took his army with him, 7and took six hundred chosen chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. 8And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he P-PHAROAH pursued the people of Israel while the people of Israel were going out defiantly. 9The Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army, and overtook them encamped at the sea, by Pi-hahiroth (MOUTH OF WATER), in front of Baal-zephon BAAL OF THE NORTH, A PAGAN SHRINE). SO ISRAEL (MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN … ALL SLAVES) IS CAMPED AT THE BAAL-SHRINE … A STANDOFF BUT ISRAEL HAS THE WATER AT THEIR BACKS. EGYPT AT THIS POINT IN HISTORY DIDN’T HAVE MUCH OF A STANDING ARMY, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN MILITARY AGED MEN WHO WERE CALLED UP BY THE NOBILITY (CAPTAINS). ALSO, EGYPTIAN CHARIOTS WERE VERY LIGHT, WITH LARGE THIN WHEELS, FOR ONE PERSON, USUALLY USED TO DISPERSE ARCHERS … THEY REPRESENTED THE PEAK OF EGYPT’S MILITARY PROWESS AT THAT TIME, SO PHAROAH IS SERIOUS ABOUT THIS ...

10When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. 11They said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? 12Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” GET USED TO THIS … THIS IS ISRAEL’S MINDSET AT THAT TIME AND THESE COMPLAINTS ARE GOING TO BE REGURGITATED ON A REGULAR BASIS … ISRAEL ALSO HADN’T LEARNED FROM THE PLAGUES AND THE PASSOVER … 13And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. 14The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” MOSES HAS APPARENTLY LEARNED HIS LESSONS ...

15The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? GET GOING! Tell the people of Israel to go forward. 16Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground. 17And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and his horsemen. 18And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”

SO, WHICH SEA IS THIS? THE GREEK SEPTUAGINT REFERS TO THIS AS THE RED SEA BC WHAT WE KNOW TODAY AS THE RED SEA WAS FIRST CALLED THE RED SEA BY THE GREEKS. THE HEBREW HAS “YAM SUPH” (YAM WAS A CHAOS GOD/MONSTER) WHICH MEANS SEA OF REEDS (THE RED/REED THING ONLY WORKS IN ENGLISH), IN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN TEXTS, GOING BACK TO THE OLD KINGDOM, THE SEA OF REEDS WAS A THING YOU HAD TO PASS OVER, OR THROUGH, ON YOUR WAY TO THE AFTERLIFE. THE DEAD WHO HADN’T APPEASED THE EGYPTIAN GODS CORRECTLY WERE CAUGHT IN THE REEDS AND PERISHED ETERNALLY … THE EGYPTIAN UNDERSTANDING OF WHO THE “DAMNED” WERE … THE ETERNALLY DROWNED. IT’S AN OVERLAP, THEY PASSED THROUGH AN ACTUAL BODY OF WATER, BUT IT WAS ALSO SYMBOLIC OF YAHWEH DEFEATING BAAL ZEPHON (WHERE THEY WERE CAMPED), WHO SUPPOSEDLY HAD DEFEATED YAM THE CHAOS GOD, AND THE EGYPTIAN AFTERLIFE. SO, YAHWEH MADE BAAL & YAM STAND UP AT ATTENTION ON DRY GROUND AS ISRAEL PASSED THROUGH THIS EGYPTIAN MYTHOLOGICAL SUPERNATURAL SEA OF REEDS. WE NOW KNOW, THROUGH SATELLITE IMAGING THAT DURING THIS PERIOD IN EGYPT’S HISTORY THERE WERE A SERIES OF MAN MADE LOCKS, OR CHANNELS, ALONG THE BORDER OF EGYPT FOR SHIPS TO UNLOAD, THAT HAVE NOW DRIED OUT … THAT MAY HAVE BEEN THE WATER THAT WAS CROSSED, BUT WE DON’T KNOW FOR SURE. ALSO, THE SEA REPRESENTS CHAOS, DEATH & DESTRUCTION IN THE OLD TESTAMENT.

19 Then the angel of God (JESUS-THE PERSONAL MESSENGER OF YAHWEH-WHEN WE SEE GOD APPEARING IN THE FORM OF A MAN Nine chapters later in Exodus God explains who this angel is: Ex 23: 20“See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. 21Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. 22If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. 23My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out. Has the ability to FORGIVE/NOT FORGIVE, Jehovah’s NAME is in him & WHAT HE (angel) SAYS IS WHAT GOD SAYS ! … it’s Jesus … THE SAME ANGEL MOSES ENCOUNTERED A FEW MONTHS BEFORE THIS AT THE BURNING BUSH ON SINAI)

19 Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud (THE HOLY SPIRIT? … THE CLOUD THAT ENVELOPED EVERYONE DURING THE TRANSFIGURATION) moved from before them and stood behind them, SO, THERE ARE TWO VISUAL MANIFESTATIONS OF GOD PRESENT AND BOTH HAVE MOVED BEHIND THE ISRAELITES TO PROTECT THEM FROM THE EGYPTIANS, AND WE HAD JUST HEARD YAHWEH SPEAKING TO MOSES, SO, THIS IS MOST LIKELY AN OT APPEARANCE OF THE TRINITY …

19 Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them 20coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night. SO DARK FOR THE EGYPTIANS THAT THEY DIDN’T APPROACH THE ISRAELITES.

21Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24And in the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic, 25clogging their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily. And the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from before Israel, for the Lord fights for them against the Egyptians.” DUH … THE PLAGUES HAD JUST OCCURRED INCLUDING THE DEATH OF THE FIRSTBORN!

26Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.” 27So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal course when the morning appeared. And as the Egyptians fled into it, the Lord threw the Egyptians into the midst of the sea. 28The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen; of all the host of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea, not one of them remained. 29But the people of Israel walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

30Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses. ANOTHER DRAMATIC MANIFESTATION OF YAHWEH DEFEATING THE EGYPTIAN ARMY AND GODS … ANY EGYPTIAN WHO SAW THIS WENT BACK AND SPREAD THE WORD … THIS IS A SEMINAL MOMENT IN ISRAEL’S HISTORY AND IS REFERRED TO OVER AND OVER AGAIN THROUGHOUT SCRIPTURE. KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS IS NOT AN ALLEGORY … IT’S AN ACTUAL HISTORICAL EVENT THAT ISRAEL EXPERIENCED. SO, YOU HAVE ISRAEL BEING RESCUED FROM THE KILLING OF THE FIRSTBORN THROUGH THE PASSOVER LAMB(S), THEN THE YAHWEH LEADING HIS PEOPLE AS THEY PASS THROUGH THE WATERS FROM DEATH TO NEW LIFE … A PICTURE OF CHRIST’S SACRIFICE AND OUR NEW LIFE THROUGH BAPTISM. 1 Cor 10:1 PAUL WRITING For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3and all ate the same spiritual food, 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
