EXODUS Ch 22 ISRAEL STILL AT MT SINAI

Ex 22:1 “If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it or sells it, he shall repay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

THEFT FOR PROFIT – ONE OF THE MOST GRAVE SINS IN TERMS OF THE STABILITY OF A SOCIETY. THOU SHALT NOT STEAL … REPAY AT 5 TIMES THE ORIGINAL VALUE. THINK ABOUT NEIGHBORHOODS WITH BARS ON THE WINDOWS; FEAR, LIMITED INTERACTION WITH NEIGHBORS, IT CHOKES OUT SOCIETY AND LIMITS INVESTMENT … NO ONE WANTS TO START A BUSINESS THERE … LIMITED JOBS, PROSPERITY, SOCIAL GROWTH.

Ex 22:2 If a thief is found breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no bloodguilt for him, 3but if the sun has risen on him, there shall be bloodguilt for him. (BLOODGUILT ON THE HOMEOWNER IF HE STRUCK WHEN IT WAS DAYLIGHT) He (THE THIEF) shall surely pay. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. 4If the stolen beast is found alive in his possession, whether it is an ox or a donkey or a sheep, he shall pay double. SELL HIM INTO SLAVERY IF HE’S UNABLE TO PAY FOR THE THEFT.

Ex 22:5“If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed over, or lets his beast loose and it feeds in another man’s field, he shall make restitution from the best in his own field and in his own vineyard.

Ex 22:6“If fire breaks out and catches in thorns so that the stacked grain or the standing grain or the field is consumed, he who started the fire shall make full restitution.

UNCONTROLLED FIRE WAS DEVASTATING IN ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS! IF YOU START A FIRE – YOU’RE RESPONSIBLE FOR IT!

Ex 22:7“If a man gives to his neighbor money or goods to keep safe, and it is stolen from the man’s house, then, if the thief is found, he (THE THIEF) shall pay double. 8If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall come near to God (TAKE AN OATH BEFORE JUDGES) to show whether or not he has put his hand to his neighbor’s property. 9For every breach of trust, whether it is for an ox, for a donkey, for a sheep, for a cloak, or for any kind of lost thing, of which one says, ‘This is it,’ the case of both parties shall come before God (JUDGES). The one whom God condemns shall pay double to his neighbor.

Ex 22:10“If a man gives to his neighbor a donkey or an ox or a sheep or any beast to keep safe, and it dies or is injured or is driven away, without anyone seeing it, 11an oath by the Lord shall be between them both to see whether or not he has put his hand to his neighbor’s property. The owner shall accept the oath (GIVEN BEFORE GOD), and he shall not make restitution. 12But if it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner. 13If it is torn by beasts, let him bring it as evidence. He shall not make restitution for what has been torn. EVEN IF YOU KNOW THE GUY IS LYING … GOD IS THE JUDGE, NOT ME

JUDGES ADJUDICATE … THEY JUDGE BASED ON THE EVIDENCE GIVEN. THIS IS THE FIRST LAW REQUIRING THAT AN OATH BE GIVEN AND THE OATH IS TO BE RESPECTED. TAKE A WITNESS AT HIS WORD … THOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS.

Ex 22:14“If a man borrows anything of his neighbor (FOR A FEE), and it is injured or dies, the owner not being with it, he shall make full restitution. 15If the owner was with it, he shall not make restitution; if it was hired, it came for its hiring fee.

DETAILS … JUST WHAT ISRAEL NEEDS … LIFE IS LIVED IN THE DETAILS. THIS STOPS ENDLESS RETRIBUTION … LOVING YOUR NEIGHBOR IN ACTION

Ex 22:16 “If a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price for her and make her his wife. 17If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money equal to the bride-price for virgins.

HERE’S HOW TO THINK ABOUT THIS … CONSIDER AN 18 YEAR OLD CHURCH YOUTH LEADER WHO SEDUCES A 16 YR OLD GIRL IN HIS YOUTH GROUP AND GETS HER PREGNANT … AND SAYS, “OH, WHAT HAVE I DONE?” THE ANSWER IS … “YOU’VE TAKEN A WIFE!” LOT OF WISDOM IN SHOTGUN WEDDINGS. THIS IS SEDUCTION – NOT RAPE. NOTE, THE FATHER HAS FINAL SAY IN THIS, BUT EITHER MARRIAGE OR RESTITUTION MUST BE MADE.

IN THE ANCIENT WORLD BETROTHAL WAS MARRIAGE … WAITING FOR CONSUMATION.

VIRGINITY WAS TO BE EXPECTED AND RESPECTED … ONCE A WOMAN WAS NO LONGER A VIRGIN SHE COULD NOT MAKE A LEGAL MARRIAGE IN THE ANCIENT WORLD … AND HER FUTURE WAS GOING TO BE BEGGING OR PROSTITUTION … IF A MAN TOOK A WOMAN’S VIRGINITY – HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR HER FOR LIFE.

OUR MODERN SOCIETY HAS TRIED TO DO ALL OF THIS IN A BETTER WAY … AVOIDING REPRESSIVE SEXUAL MORALITY – YES – AND LOOK WHAT WE HAVE NOW! BACK THEN MARRIAGE WAS CELEBRATED AND ANY SEXUAL ACTIVITY OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN WAS OSTRACIZED BY SOCIETY … IT WAS FROWNED UPON, PEOPLE FELT SHAMED, THERE WAS A SOCIAL PRICE TO PAY. IT’S THE TOTAL OPPOSITE NOW UP TO HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGE BEING LEGALIZED BY MOST GOVERNMENTS WITHIN WESTERN CIVILIZATION. TODAY, NO SEXUAL ACTIVITY OUTSIDE OF TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE IS PUNISHED. THE BEDROCK OF CIVILIZATION IS CRUMBLING. EVEN THE CHURCH IS BEGINNING TO CONDONE SAME SEX MARRIAGE.

FOR ISRAEL AT SINAI – THEY NEEDED THIS GUIDANCE!! EVEN IN THE CHURCH … NOTE HOW MUCH OF NEW TESTAMENT GUIDANCE IS DIRECTED AT SEXUAL SIN – SO, THERE HAD TO BE A LOT OF IT GOING ON … TODAY, ALSO …

Matthew 5:28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Acts 15:29 (JERUSALEM COUNCIL’S GUIDANCE TO NEW GENTILE BELIEVERS) That you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.”

1 Corinthians 5:1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

1 Corinthians 5:9-11 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.

1 Corinthians 6:9-Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Corinthians 6:15-16 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.”

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

1 Corinthians 7:2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.

1 Corinthians 10:8 We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day.

2 Corinthians 12:21 I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and sensuality that they have practiced.

Galatians 5:16But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 4:17Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

Ephesians 5:3-5 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

Colossians 3:5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Hebrews 13:4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;

1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.

1 Peter 2:11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.

Revelation 2:14-16 But I have a few things against you (Church in Pergamum): you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth.

Revelation 2:20 But I have this against you (Church in Thyatira), that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works. FOR THOSE OF US WHO THINK THIS PASSAGE IS REFERRING TO FALSE PROPHETS? … HOW MANY OF THE SCRIPTURES WE JUST READ WARN AGAINST THE VERY THING WE SEE THIS “JEZEBEL” DOING … SEX CLUBS IN THE CHURCH ?!? … YES! TWO OF THE SEVEN CHURCHES IN REVELATION ARE WARNED ABOUT SEXUAL IMMORALITY!

Revelation 21:8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” (COWARDLY … THE GENERATIONS THAT FOUGHT THE TWO MOST DESTRUCTIVE WARS IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD … WWI & WWII … HAVE PRODUCED THE MOST COWARDLY AND IMMORAL GENERATIONS IN HISTORY … COME QUICKLY LORD JESUS!!)

Ex 22:18 “You shall not permit a sorceress to live. (KING SAUL & THE WITCH OF ENDOR 1 SAM CH 28) NOTE – THERE WERE NO “PRIESTESSES” IN THE ANCIENT WORLD … WOMEN DOING WHAT MALE “PRIESTS” DID … “PRIESTESSES” WERE SHRINE PROSTITUTES WHERE ONE WOULD PAY THE PRICE TO THE “TEMPLE” OF THE FALSE GOD/IDOL, THEN HAVE SEX WITH THE WOMAN … MEN ALSO WERE SHRINE PROSTITUTES, AND THERE WERE MEN WHO WERE SORCERERS.

Revelation 21:8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Rev 22:14Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. 15Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

BACK TO EXODUS CH 22

Ex 22:19 “Whoever lies with an animal shall be put to death. ASSOCIATED WITH BAAL WORSHIP & SOME OTHER PAGAN RITUALS.

Ex 22:20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god, other than the Lord alone, shall be devoted to destruction DEATH.

Ex 22:21 “You shall not wrong a sojourner FOREIGNER or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. (EMPATHY) 22 You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. 23If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me (PRAYER), I will surely hear their cry, 24 and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless. FOREIGNERS WERE POWERLESS, LIKE WIDOWS AND ORPHANS … HOW DO YOU TREAT THEM?

Deut 24:19 “When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THIS LAW IN ACTION IS THE BOOK OF RUTH

RUTH AND NAOMI WERE IN A DIFFICULT AND NEARLY DESPERATE SITUATION, YET RUTH TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE LAW GOD HAD LAID OUT … GLEANING IN THE FIELDS, AND GOD PROVIDED FOR THEM.

BOAZ WAS A GOOD MAN, RIGHTEOUS IN THE WAYS OF GOD, HE WASN’T GREEDY OR STINGY, HE LOOKED OUT FOR RUTH AS SHE WAS GLEANING HIS FIELD AND GOD BLESSED HIM.

HOW DOES THIS APPLY TO US CONSIDERING OUR CURRENT DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES? AM I TRUSTING GOD AND DOING WHAT I CAN IN THE MIDST OF THE FAMINE?

THE NEW TESTAMENT’S COMMENT ON WIDOWS AND ORPHANS James 1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

BACK TO EX 22

Ex 22:25 “If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him. 26If ever you take your neighbor’s cloak in pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down, 27for that is his only covering, and it is his cloak for his body; in what else shall he sleep? And if he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

OK TO LEND MONEY TO THE POOR … BUT NOT WITH INTEREST ... DON’T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PEOPLE … WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE A PROFIT FROM A POOR PERSON? THIS IS JESUS’ PERSPECTIVE: Lk 6:30 Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. DON’T EVEN CONSIDER LOANING MONEY … JUST GIVE IT TO THE POOR.

Deut 23:19 “You shall not charge interest on loans to your brother (ISRAELITE), interest on money, interest on food, interest on anything that is lent for interest. 20You may charge a foreigner interest, but you may not charge your brother interest, that the Lord your God may bless you in all that you undertake in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.

Ex 22:28 “You shall not revile God (ELOHIM – SPIRITUAL BEINGS, CAN MEAN ANCESTORS AS IN SAMUEL BEING CALLED UP FROM THE DEAD), nor curse a ruler of your people. RULERS & ANCESTORS … THOSE IN AUTHORITY OVER YOU

Ex 22:29 “You shall not delay to offer from the fullness of your harvest and from the outflow of your presses. NOT ALLOWED TO HOARD YOUR HARVEST IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE PRICE … PUT YOUR PRODUCE UP FOR SALE AS SOON AS IT’S HARVESTED OR THE WINE IS PRESSED. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to me. 30You shall do the same with your oxen and with your sheep: seven days it shall be with its mother; on the eighth day you shall give it to me.

THE FIRSTBORN SON WAS TO BE REDEEMED, THE FIRSTBORN OX OR SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED.

Ex 22:31 “You shall be consecrated to me. Therefore you shall not eat any flesh that is torn by beasts in the field; you shall throw it to the dogs. NO SCAVENGING … DON’T EAT ROADKILL … GOD IS NOT A SCAVENGER OR PREDATOR … YOU’RE MADE IN GOD’S IMAGE … TRUST GOD AND BE KIND, FAITHFUL AND GENEROUS … LIKE GOD.
