EX CH 24 The Covenant Confirmed – ISRAEL IS STILL CAMPED AT MT SINAI

WHEN ISRAEL FIRST ARRIVED AT SINAI GOD SPOKE THE 10 COMMANDMENTS TO THEM OUT OF THUNDER & LIGHTNING … TERRIFYING … EX CH 19-20:21 … THEN THE PEOPLE ASKED MOSES TO REPRESENT THEM BEFORE YAHWEH … THEN DELIVER YAHWEH’S MESSAGE TO THEM … AND HE DID THAT IN CH 20:22 - 23 … DURING THAT TIME MOSES HAS GONE UP & DOWN THE MOUNTAIN A FEW TIMES … IN SOME CASES IT’S SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED IN SCRIPTURE, IN OTHER CASES IT’S INFERRED … AT THIS POINT IN CH 24 MOSES HAS COMMUNICATED GOD’S LAWS TO THE PEOPLE AND HE’S WITH THEM AT THE FOOT OF MT SINAI

1Then he YAHWEH said to Moses, “Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu (AARON’S TWO OLDEST SONS), and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar. 2Moses alone shall come near to the Lord, but the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with him.”

3Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the rules. And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do.” GOOD INTENTIONS AT THE BEGINNING IN LIGHT OF THE TERRIFYING DISPLAY ON MT SINAI 4And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. (MOSES HAS GOD’S AUTHORITY TO APPLY YAHWEH’S LAW TO THE PEOPLE … WRITING THE TORAH!)

He MOSES rose early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars STONES, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. 5And he sent young men of the people of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the Lord. MOSES HAD THE YOUNG MEN DO THE HARD WORK OF PREPARING AND OFFERING THESE SACRIFICES … THIS IS BEFORE THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD WAS ESTABLISHED 6And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he threw against the altar. 7Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.” 8And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.” THE FORMALIZATION OF THE COVENANT – GOD SPEAKING/GIVING IT, MOSES RECORDING IT/WRITING IT DOWN, MOSES AND THE NATION OFFERING SACRIFICES TO INSTITUTE IT

THIS IS ALSO THE FIRST TIME BLOOD IS SPRINKLED ON THE PEOPLE … BLOOD IS RARELY SPRINKLED ON PEOPLE IN THE BIBLE … GOD IS OFFICIALLY APPLYING THE COVENANT HE MADE WITH ABRAHAM, ISAAC & JACOB TO THE NEW NATION OF ISRAEL … THE BOOK OF THE COVENANT … THE LAWS OF GOD … THE COVENANT WAS TIED TO ISRAEL’S FAITHFUL OBEDIENCE. CONSIDER THIS SCENE AS WE VIEW IT WITH OUR NEW COVENANT DECODER GLASSES, OR, A RE-NEWED COVENANT INSTITUTED BY JESUS

CONSIDER THAT IN THE PROCESS OF CONDEMNING JESUS TO DEATH ISRAEL’S HIGH PRIEST IRONICALLY STATED:

Jn 1149But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.:

AND THEN AT THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF PILATE THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL SAID:

Mt 27:24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” 25And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” 26Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

CONSIDER ALSO WHAT HEBREWS SAYS COMPARING MT SINAI TO THE SACRIFICE JESUS MADE ...

Heb 12:18 A DESCRIPTION OF SINAI For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest 19and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them. 20For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.” 21Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.” 22But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

1 Pet 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

THIS NEW COVENANT HAD BEEN FORETOLD BY GOD AS HE WAS DISCIPLINING JUDAH WITH THE BABYLONIAN INVASION … THROUGH HIS PROPHET, JEREMIAH

Jer 3131 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” SO, IT SOUNDS LIKE THIS NEW COVENANT WHICH JEREMIAH PROMISED IS ONLY WITH JUDAH/ISRAEL … RIGHT? … LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THAT USING OUR NEW TESTAMENT DECODER RING

Gal 3:23Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise. SO, THE CHURCH IS PART OF ABRAHAM’S OFFSPRING … THE ISRAEL OF GOD … AND HIS LAW IS WRITTEN ON OUR HEARTS … SO THAT WE CAN OBEY IT … IF YOU LOVE ME YOU WILL KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS!

BACK TO EX 24:

9Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, (THE TWO ELDEST SONS OF AARON, WHO WILL BE KEY CHARACTERS WHEN THE TABERNACLE IS FINALLY CONSECRATED IN EARLY LEVITICUS) and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, 10and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. (FEET – GOD IS APPEARING AS A MAN – A THEOPHANY – JESUS) 11And he YAHWEH did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank.

SIMILAR SCENE: Isaiah 6:1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” 4And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

THEY SAW THE GOD OF ISRAEL AND DID NOT DIE … THE ONLY RIGHT ATTITUDE IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD IS TERROR BECAUSE OF MY SINFULNESS. AND AWE. WHAT A POWERFUL SCENE.

STUNNING … A MEAL THAT GOD SHARES – IN PERSON – WITH THE LEADERS OF HIS PEOPLE AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS FORMAL RELATIONSHIP – HIS COVENANT – WITH THEM.

LET’S LOOK AT ANOTHER MEAL THAT GOD SHARED WITH THE LEADERS OF HIS PEOPLE...

Lk 22:14 And when the hour came, he JESUS reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. 22For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” EVEN AT THE INSTITUTION OF THE NEW COVENANT JESUS-GOD WAS BETRAYED BY AN ENEMY FROM WITHIN HIS CLOSEST CIRCLE OF DISCIPLES & FRIENDS … THINK OF THIS NEW COVENANT AS THE OLD COVENANT NOW RE-NEWED THROUGH THE BLOOD/SACRIFICE OF JESUS … GOD SACRIFICING HIMSELF FOR HIS PEOPLE …

NOW LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT ANOTHER MEAL THAT GOD WILL SHARE – IN PERSON – WITH ALL OF HIS PEOPLE:

Rev 15:2 And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands (LES PAUL AND STRATOCASTER GUITARS !!). 3And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations! 4 Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

Rev 19:4 And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, “Amen. Hallelujah!” 5 And from the throne came a voice saying, “Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great.” 6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; 8 it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. 9And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”

… FOLLOWED BY A GLORIOUS MEAL THAT GOD PROVIDES FOR HIS CREATURES THAT INHABIT THE EARTHLY “HEAVENS”:

Rev 19:11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure (THE RIGHTEOUS DEEDS OF THE SAINTS), were following him on white horses. 15From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. 17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, LET ME READ A DESCRIPTION OF THE BIRDS … OF HEAVEN (Gen 1:20 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.”) BACK TO REVELATION CH 19 “Come, (BIRDS) gather for the great supper of God, 18to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great.” 19And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. 20And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. 21And the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.

v13 JESUS CLOTHED IN A ROBE DIPPED IN BLOOD … WHOSE BLOOD?

Ps 58:10 The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he (THE RIGHTEOUS – US) will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked. 11Mankind will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God who judges on earth.”

Ps 68:19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation. Selah 20Our God is a God of salvation, and to God, the Lord, belong deliverances from death. 21 But God will strike the heads of his enemies, the hairy crown of him who walks in his guilty ways. 22The Lord said, “I will bring them (HIS PEOPLE) back from Bashan, I will bring them (HIS PEOPLE) back from the depths of the sea, 23 that you (HIS PEOPLE) may strike your feet in their blood (HIS ENEMIES’ BLOOD), that the tongues of your dogs may have their portion from the foe.”

Is 63:1 (ISAIAH – DESCRIBING THE LORD), Who is this who comes from Edom in crimsoned garments from Bozrah, he who is splendid in his apparel, marching in the greatness of his strength? “It is I (THE LORD), speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.” 2 Why is your apparel red, and your garments like his who treads in the winepress? 3 “I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples no one was with me; I trod them in my anger and trampled them in my wrath; their lifeblood spattered on my garments, and stained all my apparel. 4 For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and my year of redemption had come. 5I looked, but there was no one to help; I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold; so my own arm brought me salvation, and my wrath upheld me. 6 I (THE LORD) trampled down the peoples in my anger; I made them drunk in my wrath, and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Lk 19:11 As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. 12He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return … 14But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15When he returned, having received the kingdom, … 27 But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”

SO, REV 19:13, JESUS IS COMING IN A ROBE DIPPED IN BLOOD … THAT WHOLE SCENE IS ONE OF GOD TAKING VENGEANCE ON HIS ENEMIES INCLUDING THE BIRDS GORGING ON THE FLESH OF THE SLAIN ENEMIES OF GOD, SO … WHOSE BLOOD IS ON JESUS’ ROBE? … THE BLOOD OF HIS ENEMIES

LET’S RECAP THE MEALS GOD PROVIDES TO COMMEMORATE GREAT EVENTS

SINAI – MOSES, AARON, NADAB & ABIHU (AARON’S SONS), AND 70 OF THE ELDERS OF ISRAEL EAT A MEAL WITH GOD TO CELEBRATE THE COVENANT OF THE LAW.

THE LAST SUPPER/PASSOVER OF JESUS’ HUMAN MINISTRY … SHARED WITH HIS APOSTLES, THE FUTURE LEADERS OF THE CHURCH

AT THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS THE MARRIAGE SUPPER OF THE LAMB WHERE JESUS RECEIVES HIS BRIDE – THE CHURCH. FOLLOWED BY THE SLAUGHTER OF GOD’S ENEMIES – A MEAL OF CARRION THAT GOD PROVIDES FOR THE BIRDS, THAT USHERS IN THE BINDING OF SATAN AND THE BEGINNING OF THE THOUSAND YEAR REIGN OF CHRIST. WHAT’S THE THIRD MEAL GOD PROVIDES IN HISTORY TO CELEBRATE ANOTHER TURNING POINT IN HIS PLAN?

BACK TO SINAI:

Ex 24:11And he YAHWEH did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank. NOTE THAT NONE OF THE MEN DESCRIBED IN THIS SCENE – THE MEAL WITH GOD - WILL ENTER THE PROMISED LAND, AND TWO OF THEM, AARON’S SONS NADAB AND ABIHU – DESIGNATED TO BE FUTURE HIGH PRIESTS, WILL BE KILLED BY THE HAND OF GOD IN A SHORT WHILE BECAUSE OF DISOBEDIENCE IN GOD’S PRESENCE.

REMEMBER THAT THE STORY OF ISRAEL IS ONE OF THE NATION’S CONTINUING SPIRITUAL FAILURE ALONG WITH THE SPIRITUAL SUCCESS OF A FEW INDIVIDUALS WHILE BEING SHEPHERDED BY THE LIVING GOD, YAHWEH.

IT APPEARS THAT AT THE END OF THIS MEAL EVERYONE WENT BACK DOWN THE MOUNTAIN, EXCEPT FOR MOSES, WHO WAS CALLED TO PROCEED HIGHER.

24:12 The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” 13So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. 14And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a dispute, let him go to them.”

24:15Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. NOTE THIS! THE GLORY CLOUD COVERED THE MOUNTAIN FOR SIX DAYS … THEN … MOSES (AND JOSHUA) WERE INVITED IN … TO GOD’S REST. 17Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. 18Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights. IN SCRIPTURE 40 ALWAYS PRECEEDS A CHANGE … THE FLOOD WAS 40 DAYS BEFORE GOD RESTORED THE EARTH, JESUS WAS IN THE WILDERNESS 40 DAYS AFTER HIS BAPTISM / CROSSING THE REED SEA … AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS PUBLIC MINISTRY, ISRAEL WILL BE EXILED TO THE WILDERNESS FOR UNBELIEF AND DISOBEDIENCE BEFORE THEY ENTER THE PROMISED LAND, THE CHURCH WAITED 40 DAYS FROM THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS (PASSOVER) UNTIL THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS GIVEN AT PENTECOST (FIRST FRUITS … 40 DAYS AFTER PASSOVER), NOW MOSES IS ON THE MOUNTAIN FOR 4O DAYS AT THE BEGINNING OF YAHWEH’S OFFICIAL COVENANT WITH ISRAEL.

SO, MOSES GOES UP THE MOUNTAIN AND INTO A CLOUD WHICH COVERS THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN, THEN THE MOUNTAIN SEEMS TO ERUPT INTO A VOLCANO – AN ALL CONSUMING FIRE – THE GLORY OF THE LORD.

GOD CALLED MOSES UP SPECIFICALLY TO GIVE HIM THE FIRST WRITTEN (INSCRIPTURATED) COMMUNICATION DIRECTLY FROM GOD … THE TABLETS OF STONE WITH THE LAW AND COMMANDMENTS WHICH GOD HAS WRITTEN FOR OUR INSTRUCTION. REMEMBER, LAW = LOVE. ORAL TRADITIONS CAN ALWAYS BE CORRUPTED, THE FIRST WRITTEN REVELATION FROM GOD WAS WRITTEN ON STONE … IT’S SET IN STONE … CAN’T BE CHANGED OR CORRUPTED. AND, THESE STONE TABLETS WERE TO BE KEPT IN THE ARK OF THE COVENANT.

GOD MAKES HIS PEOPLE … WAIT !!! THINGS ARE DONE IN GOD’S GOOD TIMING.

IN THE NEXT CHAPTER, EX CH 25, A CHANGE IS TAKING PLACE – GOD IS TAKING THE NEXT STEP, DESIGNING A WAY FOR HIM TO DRAW EVEN CLOSER TO HIS PEOPLE, TO TRAVEL AND “CAMP OUT” WITH THEM DIRECTLY. “GOD’S TENT, OR TABERNACLE, WILL BE CONSTRUCTED BY THE NATION OF ISRAEL, AT MOSES’ GUIDANCE, AND IT WILL BE PLACED IN THE MIDST OF ALL OF THE ISRAELITE TENTS …”

THE TABERNACLE WILL BE A LARGE AREA OPEN TO THE SKY SURROUNDED BY AN EMBROIDERED CLOTH FENCE AND ENCLOSED IN THAT AREA THERE WILL BE A TENT WITH MULTIPLE ROOMS OR DIVISIONS IN IT – THAT’S WHERE THE HOLIEST AREAS WILL BE.

THIS TABERNACLE WILL ALSO PROVIDE A PLACE TO STORE THE TABLETS OF THE LAW THAT GOD IS GIVING TO MOSES … INSIDE THE ARK OF THE COVENANT.

AND THAT WILL WRAP UP EX 24 … NOTE THAT MOSES WILL FINALLY COME DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN IN CH 32
