Exodus Chapter 29 Deep-Dive: Consecration of the Priests

Exodus Ch 29 

Moses is still on Mt Sinai being shown the heavenly tabernacle which Moses and the people of Israel are to replicate on earth … DETAILED, DETAILED, DETAILED descriptions have been given for the ark, the mercy seat (atoning lid), the table which will hold the bread of the presence and the golden lampstand which is to be kept lit at all times, the altar, the tent which will define the holy place and the most holy place, and the large tapestries which will encircle the tabernacle … roughly the size of a football field. NOW GOD WILL SET APART PRIESTS TO SERVE HIM IN HIS SANCTUARY AND BE MEDIATORS BETWEEN HIMSELF AND THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL … THIS WAS INTRODUCED IN THE LAST SECTION WHEN GOD WAS GIVING THE DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIESTLY GARMENTS Ex 28:41And you shall put them (the priestly garments) on Aaron your (Moses’) brother, and on his sons with him, and shall anoint them and ordain them and consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests SO, THIS IS THE CREATION OF THE AARONIC PRIESTHOOD WHICH EVENTUALLY DEVOLVED INTO THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD … MOSES AND AARON WERE FROM THE TRIBE OF LEVI.

Ex 29:1 “Now this is what you shall do to them to consecrate them that they may serve me as priests. EXACTLY AS GOD COMMANDS Take one bull of the herd and two rams without blemish, 2and unleavened bread, unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers smeared with oil. You shall make them of fine wheat flour. 3You shall put them in one basket and bring them in the basket, and bring the bull and the two rams. 4You shall bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting and wash them with water. 5Then you shall take the garments, and put on Aaron the coat and the robe of the ephod, and the ephod, and the breastpiece, and gird him with the skillfully woven band of the ephod. 6And you shall set the turban on his head and put the holy crown on the turban. 7You shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him. 8Then you shall bring his sons and put coats on them, 9and you shall gird Aaron and his sons with sashes and bind caps on them. And the priesthood shall be theirs by a statute forever. Thus you shall ordain Aaron and his sons.

KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS PRIESTHOOD WILL FAIL, FAIL, FAIL TO DO WHAT GOD INTENDS. EVEN AS MOSES IS ON SINAI GOD’S HIGH PRIEST, AARON, IS WITH THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL, AT THE FOOT OF SINAI, MAKING THE GOLDEN CALF IDOL ?!?!

Ex 29:10“Then you shall bring the bull UNBELEMISHED before the tent of meeting. Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the bull. LET’S STOP AND CONSIDER THIS STATEMENT … MANY BIBLE SCHOLARS TEACH THAT THIS IS A SYMBOLIC TRANSFER OF THE SINS OF AARON AND HIS SONS TO THE BULL, HOWEVER, ANOTHER WAY TO THINK ABOUT THIS IS THAT THEY ARE LAYING ON HANDS TO IDENTIFY THAT PARTICULAR BULL AS THE SACRIFICE AND IDENTIFY WITH IT … THE MEANING IS NOT COMPLETELY CLEAR … CONSIDER THAT THE ONLY PLACE IN THE BIBLE WHERE IT’S STATED THAT SINS ARE ACTUALLY PLACED ON AN ANIMAL IS LEVITICUS 16, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT, AND THOSE SINS ARE PLACED ON THE GOAL WHICH IS SENT INTO THE WILDERNESS. THE THOUGHT PROCESS IS THAT ONCE SINS ARE PLACED ON AN ANIMAL IS IT STILL HOLY AND UNBLEMISHED AND ACCEPTABLE AS A SACRIFICE? BACK TO EX 29 11Then you shall kill the bull before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting (THE ENTRANCE OF THE TABERNACLE – THE HOLY PLACE AND HOLY OF HOLIES WAS INSIDE THE TABERNACLE – WHERE BOTH THE LORD AND THE PEOPLE CAN SEE IT … THOSE OUTSIDE THE TABERNACLE), 12and shall take part of the blood of the bull and put it on the horns of the altar with your finger, and the rest of the blood you shall pour out at the base of the altar. GALLONS OF BLOOD INVOLVED IN THE WHOLE PROCESS POURED OUT AT THE BASE OF THE ALTAR … CONSIDER THE MESS THIS MADE! 13And you shall take all the fat that covers the entrails, and the long lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar. ENTRAILS, LIVERS AND KIDNEYS WERE OFTEN USED IN PAGAN MAGIC, WITCHCRAFT & DIVINATION … BURN THEM UP – ON THE ALTAR SO THAT NO ONE ELSE CAN USE THEM ... !!! 14But the flesh of the bull and its skin and its dung (BULL-POO IS EXPELLED OR EXPOSED WHEN YOU SLAUGHTER THE ANIMAL) you shall burn with fire outside the camp; it is a sin offering. WHERE THE UNCLEAN IS TAKEN … NOT RITUALLY CLEAN … REMEMBER, JESUS DIED OUTSIDE THE CAMP.

DISSECTION AND DISMEMBERMENT OF A BULL … A NASTY, BLOODY, BRUTAL PHYSICALLY DIFFICULT PROCESS.

Ex 29:15“Then you shall take one of the rams WITHOUT BLEMISH, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram NOT NECESSARILY THAT THE SINS OF AARON AND HIS SONS ARE LAID ON THE RAM, OR, SIMPLY THAT THE LAYING ON OF HANDS DESIGNATES THAT SPECIFIC ANIMAL AS THE SACRIFICE 16and you shall kill the ram and shall take its blood and throw it against the sides of the altar. 17Then you shall cut the ram into pieces, and wash its entrails and its legs, and put them with its pieces and its head, 18and burn the whole ram on the altar. It is a burnt offering to the Lord. It is a pleasing aroma a food offering to the Lord. IF DONE PROPERLY GOD WILL ACCEPT THE SACRIFICE AND ISRAEL WILL BE REMINDED OF THAT ACCEPTANCE BY THE SMELL – MEAT COOKING – A PLEASING SMELL TO MOST PEOPLE,

A “PLEASING AROMA FOR YAHWEH” … CONSIDER … Gen 8:20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. 22While the earth remains, seed-time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”: So, this passage appears to be saying that when God smelled the pleasing aroma of Noah’s sacrifice, He made a decision to never again curse the ground because of man. Remember, God does appear as a man in more than a few places in the old testament and when he was traveling to Sodom with the two angels the three of them did stop to visit Abraham and Sarah and they ate the food that Sarah prepared …

BACK TO EXODUS … THESE SACRIFICES ARE NOT “FEEDING GOD” ANIMALS THAT WERE SLAUGHTERED AND COOKED WERE FOOD FOR THE PEOPLE AND/OR THE PRIESTS DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF OFFERING OR SACRIFICE … THE ISRAELITES ARE OFFERING THE ANIMAL TO GOD AS FOOD THEY WOULD HAVE EATEN THEMSELVES, INSTEAD, THEY’RE GIVING IT TO GOD. GOD IS NOT DEPENDENT ON, OR IMPROVED BY, THESE SACRIFICES

Ex 29:19 “You shall take the other ram, A SECOND RAM and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram, 20and you shall kill the ram and take part of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron and on the tips of the right ears of his sons, and on the thumbs of their right hands and on the great toes of their right feet REMEMBER, FEET ARE UNCOVERED WHEN STANDING ON HOLY GROUND, ALSO, MOST PEOPLE ARE RIGHT HANDED … AS THE PRIEST STEPS FORWARD IT IS WITH THE RIGHT FOOT FIRST – AND GOD WILL SEE THE BLOOD ON THE BIG TOE, THE PRIEST REACHES FORWARD WITH THE RIGHT HAND – AND GOD WILL SEE THE BLOOD ON THE THUMB, AS THE PRIEST INCLINES HIS HEAD TO LISTEN TO GOD HE MOVES HIS RIGHT EAR TO THE FRONT – AND GOD WILL SEE THE BLOOD … REMEMBER, THIS SYSTEM IS BEING SET UP TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE … PROTECT THEM FROM WHO? … YAHWEH!

ALSO, THE BLOOD PLACED ON THE PRIESTS DESIGNATES THAT THEY BELONG TO YAHWEH … NOT A JOB YOU CAN CLOCK INTO AND OUT OF … YOU’RE ALWAYS A PRIEST, 24/7. BACK TO EX 29: … and throw the rest of the blood against the sides of the altar. LOT OF MESSY BLOOD ON THE SIDES OF THE ALTAR AND THE BASE 21Then you shall take part of the blood that is on the altar, and of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and his garments, and on his sons and his sons’ garments with him. He and his garments shall be holy, and his sons and his sons’ garments with him.

NOTE THAT THERE ARE VERY FEW PLACES IN THE BIBLE WHERE BLOOD IS PLACED ON PEOPLE, THIS IS THE ONLY PASSAGE IN THE NT:

1 Pet 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood:

BACK TO EX 29 … NOTE THAT ALL OF THIS DETAIL MAY BE REQUIRED BE GOD SIMPLY TO SEE IF THE PEOPLE WILL FOLLOW IT … HOW SERIOUS ARE YOU ABOUT TRULY FOLLOWING ME, WORSHIPING ME – AS I COMMAND YOU TO, KNOWING ME – KNOWING GOD.

Ex 29:22“You shall also take the fat from the ram and the fat tail and the fat that covers the entrails, and the long lobe of the liver and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, and the right thigh (for it is a ram of ordination), 23and one loaf of bread and one cake of bread made with oil, and one wafer out of the basket of unleavened bread that is before the Lord. 24You shall put all these on the palms of Aaron and on the palms of his sons, A HEAVY BLOODY MESSY PILE and wave them for a wave offering before the Lord. MAKING SURE GOD SEES IT … LIKE WAVING A FLAG … TO GET GOD’S ATTENTION – TO AVOID HIS WRATH. 25Then you shall take them from their hands and burn them on the altar on top of the burnt offering, as a pleasing aroma before the Lord. It is a food offering to the Lord. NOT “FEEDING GOD” THIS IS FOOD YOU WOULD HAVE EATEN … NOW OFFERED TO GOD.

NO ONE WOULD MAKE THIS UP … IN THESE INSTRUCTIONS GOD SEEMS TO BE SAYING: “HOW SERIOUS ARE YOU ABOUT FOLLOWING, SERVING AND KNOWING ME?”

Ex 29:26“You shall take the breast of the ram of Aaron’s ordination and wave it for a wave offering before the Lord, and it shall be your (MOSES’) portion. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME A PORTION IS OFFERED TO MOSES, BECAUSE MOSES IS ACTING AS THE REPRESENTATIVE OF GOD IN CONSECRATING AARON AND HIS SONS FOR THE FIRST TIME – INSTITUTING THE PRIESTHOOD. AFTER THIS, THE HIGH PRIEST WILL TAKE THE PLACE OF MOSES AS FUTURE PRIESTS AND HIGH PRIESTS ARE CONSECRATED. 27And you shall consecrate the breast of the wave offering that is waved and the thigh of the priests’ portion that is contributed from the ram of ordination, from what was Aaron’s and his sons’. 28It shall be for Aaron and his sons as a perpetual due from the people of Israel, for it is a contribution. It shall be a contribution from the people of Israel from their peace offerings, their contribution to the Lord. IT’S OFFERED TO GOD, AND GOD GIVES IT TO THE PRIESTHOOD…

Ex 29:29“The holy garments of Aaron shall be for his sons after him; they shall be anointed in them and ordained in them. 30The son who succeeds him as priest, who comes into the tent of meeting to minister in the Holy Place, shall wear them seven days. A SEVEN DAY PROCESS … THE GARMENTS ARE PASSED ON THROUGH THE GENERATIONS … THE GARMENT DESIGNATES THE PRIESTLY OFFICE THE MAN HOLDS

Ex 29:31“You shall take the ram of ordination and boil its flesh in a holy place. 32And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram and the bread that is in the basket in the entrance of the tent of meeting. SO THOSE OUTSIDE THE TABERNACLE CAN ALSO OBSERVE THIS 33They shall eat those things with which atonement was made at their ordination and consecration, but an outsider shall not eat of them, because they are holy. 34And if any of the flesh for the ordination or of the bread remain until the morning, then you shall burn the remainder with fire. It shall not be eaten, because it is holy. IT’S A PERPETUAL DUE – IF YOU CAN’T EAT ALL OF IT, THEN BURN UP THE LEFTOVERS … HYPERSCRUPULOUS … NOTHING LEFT TO CHANCE, MISUNDERSTANDING, OR FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE. IT BELONGS TO GOD.

Ex 29:35“Thus you shall do to Aaron and to his sons, according to all that I have commanded you. Through seven days shall you ordain them, 36and every day you shall offer a bull as a sin offering for atonement. Also you shall purify the altar, when you make atonement for it, and shall anoint it to consecrate it. 37Seven days you shall make atonement for the altar and consecrate it, and the altar shall be most holy. Whatever touches the altar shall become holy. SOMETHING “BECOMING HOLY” SIMPLY MEANS THAT IT BELONGS TO GOD. PURIFYING THE ALTAR MEANS RESETTING IT TO IT’S ORIGINAL NATURE OR PURPOSE … SACRED SPACE, SACRED OBJECTS USED IN THE SACRIFICIAL SYSTEM … THE ALTAR MUST BE PURIFIED BECAUSE IT’S BEING HANDLED BY NASTY, SINFUL, UNCLEAN HUMANS

Ex 29:38“Now this is what you shall offer on the altar: two lambs a year old day by day regularly. 39One lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight. SUNRISE AND SUNSET, EVERY DAY. 40And with the first lamb a tenth measure of fine flour mingled with a fourth of a hin of beaten oil, and a fourth of a hin of wine for a drink offering. 41The other lamb you shall offer at twilight, and shall offer with it a grain offering and its drink offering, as in the morning, for a pleasing aroma ISRAEL WILL BE ABLE TO SMELL THE MEAT COOKING AND BE REMINDED OF THE DAILY SACRIFICE, a food offering to the Lord. 42It shall be a regular burnt offering throughout your generations at the entrance of the tent of meeting THE ALTAR COULD BE SEEN FROM THE ENTRANCE before the Lord, where I will meet with you, to speak to you there. 43There I will meet with the people of Israel, and it shall be sanctified by my glory. 44I will consecrate the tent of meeting and the altar. Aaron also and his sons I will consecrate to serve me as priests. 45I will dwell among the people of Israel and will be their God. 46And they shall know that I am the Lord their God (YAHWEH), who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them. I am the Lord their God. THIS REMINDER IS OFFERED OVER AND OVER AND OVER THROUGHOUT THE HISTORY OF ISRAEL … “THAT I MIGHT DWELL AMONG THEM” IS NEW. GOD HAD TO BRING ISRAEL OUT OF SINFUL, IDOLATROUS EGYPT IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO DWELL AMONG THEM. GOD WILL USE HIS TABERNACLE IN ORDER TO TRAVEL WITH HIS PEOPLE, TO COMMUNE WITH THEM, TO ENJOY HIS PEOPLE, TO BLESS HIS PEOPLE, GUIDE AND PROVIDE FOR THEM, SO THAT HIS PEOPLE CAN BE A NATION OF PRIESTS BEFORE THE REST OF THE SINFUL CORRUPT WORLD.

BEFORE WE WRAP UP CONSIDER THESE PASSAGES FROM THE NT:

John 1:14 (THE APOSTLE JOHN WRITING) And the Word (JESUS) became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15(John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God (YAHWEH); the only God (JESUS), who is at the Father’s side, he (JESUS) has made him (YAHWEH) known.

1 Cor 6:19 PAUL WRITING TO THE CORINTHIANS Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

Rom 12:1 I (PAUL) appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
