How To Make Beer Bread

Cooking With Kat SD

Release Date: 11/04/2009

Bread!  Who doesn't love bread!?!?  There's very few things in this life that are better and fill me with more warmth and joy than walking into house that's filled with the smell of baking bread.  There's this wonderful...moment of joy that comes with that first, buttery bite from a fresh loaf of bread.  Over the years, I've been to many restaurants and steak houses that have served either beer rolls or beer bread.  What a wonderful flavor that always has.

My friend Rhonda gave me this incredibly simple recipe this summer.  I made the first few batches using Michelob Ultra and it was great!  Dave suggested that we try some different beers and see how much difference the type of beer made to the loaf.

Since Dave and I don't know too much about beer, we thought we'd tap (get it?  Beer?  Tap?) our friends over at Abs Of Beer TV ( absofbeertv.com ) and get their recommendation on a beer or two that could really make a great bread.

Brian and John both thought that something with chocolate or moca coffee flavors would work well.  Brian also loves a certain oatmeal stout that he suggested we use.   They pointed us to Young's Double Chocolate Stout , and Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout .

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups self-rising flour (NOT all purpose)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 12 oz beer of your choice

Directions:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add flour, sugar, beer
  3. Fold ingredients together.  Be sure to incorporate but don't knead the dough.  The less you have to work it, the better the bread will be.
  4. Spray non-stick cooking spray in your baking pan then lightly dust with flour. (you can also use Baker's Joy)
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 mins to an hour.
