What is Meditation?
Meditation is a practice where you train your mind or induce a state of consciousness. You can meditate for relaxation, stress reduction, and healing. Meditation also helps develop certain qualities such as love, patience, generosity, and forgiveness. Meditation is beneficial to practice on a daily basis, because it allows you to tap into the unlimited resources of your mind, and have a profound effect on your life.
With a clear mind, meditation makes you feel more relaxed, calm, and aware.
Meditation allows you to also:
- Tap into your intuition to achieve greater levels of control and success.
- Clear daily distractions and stress.
- Trigger the body to relax and help repair itself.
- Feel better, refreshed, and have the ability to work through various stressful challenges.
The Benefits of Meditation
Benefits of meditation include greater productivity and focus, less stress throughout the day, anxiety relief, and better sleep at night. In addition, meditation helps reset your hormones, promotes faster healing, and stronger immunity. Some of the spiritual benefits of meditation include greater awareness of the world around you, and a deep connection to yourself and your purpose.
Research has proven that while meditating, it causes:
- Heart rate to slow down
- Improved immune function
- Increased creativity
- Reduced blood pressure, anxiety, insomnia
Try different meditation methods to learn what approach works best for you. Here are a couple techniques you may find beneficial in relieving stress:
- Tai Chi (Chinese Marital Arts)—A series of slow graceful movements, while doing deep breathing.
- Yoga—A series of postures, controlled by breathing exercises, that promotes a more flexible body and calm mind, which requires balance and concentration.
You may consider trying Kundalini yoga, a spiritual yoga which can help you become more focused, make better decisions, and experience more positive energy. When your mind is clear and focused, and your body is relaxed and calm, you can access information that can help you make better decisions.
After meditating consistently, you will begin to discover that you have a great deal of wisdom within. Take the time to listen to your intuition.
How Long Should You Meditate For?
How long you meditate depends on your lifestyle and your work schedule. Whenever you are experiencing stress on your job or at home, take ten minutes to practice deep breathing and relaxation.
Follow These Steps for Effective Meditation:
- Wear comfortable workout clothes.
- Find a quiet place (free of distraction), close your eyes, and focus on slowing down your breathing.
- Repeat any uplifting comforting word or phrase such as, "re-lax" or "I am love,"silently, over and over.
- Move into a state of quiet.
- Visualize yourself in a happy and productive working environment. Remember, learning how to meditate effectively takes practice and consistency.
Meditation You Can Practice on Your Own
Now that we’ve discussed the importance of incorporating meditation into your life, we are now going illustrate a quick meditation you can practice on your own.
Before you start this meditation, find a quiet place and without distractions. You can be sitting on the floor with your leg crossed, or sitting in a chair (with good posture), feet flat on the floor, hands together in your lap. If you are driving or operating a vehicle, you will need to pull over and stop your car for this meditation.
Actual Meditation Exercise with Music
Step One—
Relax. Close your eyes, imagine yourself stepping into a calm and quiet environment. Take several deep breaths through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Then let your breathing become steady, rhythmic and relaxed. Focus on nothing but your breathing.
Step Two—
Keep your body relaxed and your eyes closed. At first your mind may wander. Bring it gently back to the focal point of your concentration. As your mind wanders again, bring it back again.
Step Three—
Focus on your breathing to keep your mind in a relax state. Now move into a state of quiet. Observe your state of mind, noticing any thoughts, feelings or physical sensations that arise in your consciousness.
Step Four—
At the end of the meditation, visualize yourself in a calm state of relaxation as you are helping to create a pleasant, happy, and productive working environment. Visualize yourself coming back to the state of relaxation and alertness, noticing your fingers, your toes, your thoughts, noticing where you are at the moment. Take normal breaths in and out few times, and now open your eyes.
