Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 20th July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

MERCEDES EQS ELECTRIC SEDAN TO OFFER MORE THAN 435 MILES OF RANGE

"Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Daimler’s Annual Meeting organized this month was unconventional as it was hosted exclusively online. Head honcho Ola Källenius talked about how the COVID-19 outbreak has taken its toll on car sales before moving on to more exciting news.. After providing preliminary details regarding the Mercedes S-Class W223 debuting in September, Daimler’s CEO changed the subject to the EQS. He reiterated it will be a car developed from the ground up as an EV rather than being an electric conversion of the next-generation S-Class. Just like the concept presented in 2019, the production version will have a range of more than 435 miles (700 kilometers) thanks to batteries manufactured in-house at Daimler’s Stuttgart-Untertürkheim plant." says Motor1.com: "The Tesla Model S Long Range Plus is touted as being the first true 400-mile EV on sale in the United States courtesy of an official EPA-rated range of 402 miles (647 kilometers). It remains to be seen whether the Mercedes EQS will be able to beat that. For the time being, the Model S available in Europe with the longest range has a WLTP-certified rating of 379 miles (610 kilometers)."

ALIBABA-BACKED EV MAKER XPENG RAISES $500 MILLION.

"Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Xpeng Motors, backed by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (BABA.N), said on Monday it has raised around $500 million in its latest funding round. As enthusiasm builds for more climate-friendly vehicles, shares of EV makers, including Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and Nio Inc (NIO.N), have surged in recent months and auto makers are looking to the markets for funds." says Reuters today: "Xpeng, led by Chief Executive He Xiaopeng, is making electric G3 sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) and P7 sedans with autonomous driving capabilities in two Chinese plants. The funding will enable Xpeng to further develop intelligent vehicle technologies. The company plans to have about 200 showrooms in China by the end of this year."

TESLA WILL LEASE YOU A MODEL Y FOR $499 PER MONTH

"The Long Range starts at $49,990 after a recent price reduction. The Performance carries a starting price of $59,990. If you finance through Tesla, the Model Y Long Range will cost you about $699 per month for 72 months with $4,500 down. That's at 2.49% APR. Now, you can choose to lease the Model Y through Tesla. The deal works out to $499 per month for 36 months with $4,500 due at signing. It's a 10,000-mile-per-year lease, which is common among luxury vehicle" according to InsideEVs: "Leasing is popular in the U.S., so Tesla is likely taking advantage of this as another tool to increase demand. It also means people who may not be able to afford an expensive car can fit the Model Y in their budget. Leases are very common for luxury vehicles. Even at zero-percent interest, financing a $50,000 car results in a significant monthly payment."

CATL WILL SOON BE SHIPPING LFP BATTERIES FOR TESLA CHINA MODEL 3S

"CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.) who is currently China’s largest battery manufacturer today (with 28% of the global battery market) confirmed that it will start shipping it’s LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate Batteries) later this month directly to Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, for use in its China-only, entry level, Model 3 Standard Range Plus EVs." says Torque News: "Currently, today’s Chinese Model 3s get their batteries from Panasonic, who has been the sole battery provider for Tesla so far (LG also has a battery contract with Tesla for Chinese battery production) and it looks like CATL will start to ship LFP battery cells to Giga Shanghai sometime this month. And even though LFP prismatic battery packs are more difficult to cool, and provide lower energy density than Panasonic’s NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum) or LG Chem’s NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) batteries which Tesla uses, the Model 3 SP LFP should offer comparable EV range, possibly using a larger capacity pack, or using CATL’s cell-to-pack technology."

TESLA SEMI PILOT LINE “COMING TOGETHER” — EMPLOYEE LEAK

"A Tesla employee based at Tesla Gigafactory 1 in Nevada has indicated that the pilot production line for the Tesla Semi is under development, implying that things seem to be going well. This person tweeted last week, “New nugget: pilot line for Semi coming together….”" says CleanTechnica: "This person has provided insight on a number of factors in the past year — vehicle production line development in Fremont as the Model Y has rolled out and the use of Tesla’s Lathrop facility a bit northeast of Fremont as a parts supply facility and for vehicle casting, for example — but he has primarily provided insight on battery production. He first responded to a discussion about battery production at the gigafactory on September 20, 2019"

UK’S FIRST BATTERY GIGAPLANT MOVES A STEP CLOSER

Britishvolt is pleased to announce that it has signed an MOU with the Welsh Government as both parties work together on plans to develop a commercially viable 30 GWh battery manufacturing plant, and supplementary 200MW solar plant, at the former RAF base at Bro Tathan, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales.

After six months of careful analysis, the site was narrowed down from over 40 locations, due to a number of factors including: import/export accessibility, availability of labour and skilled staff, and convenient geographical proximity to customers and local industrial companies. Both parties have now signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), to collaborate on the potential of building the UK’s first full cycle battery cell gigaplant subject to UK government funding through the Automotive Transformation Fund, to produce lithium ion cylindrical and pouch cells primarily servicing the automotive market.

GIGA BERLIN MEETS MORE BUREAUCRACY IN GERMANY

"The trouble surrounding permissions to build the Tesla Gigafactory in Germany continues, local media reports. The company charged with covering the water requirements for Giga Berlin has stopped planning." says electrive: "Regional broadcaster RBB reports this online, citing an internal letter from the Strauss-Erkner (WSE) water association. At the heart of the problem are unsigned contracts and future estimations. German authorities in Brandenburg had greenlighted Tesla to lay the foundations for the planned plant in Grünheide just a week ago – and despite the full environmental permit still pending. The Californians have been struggling with the permits since months, after environmental group’s objected the plans, forcing Tesla to redraft the planning permission. One concern was the factory’s water consumption, and Tesla reduced the planned water consumption in the application documents."

WE CHARGE: VOLKSWAGEN’S NEW CHARGING SERVICE HAS OVER 150,000 PUBLIC CHARGING POINTS

Volkswagen is rolling out its own charging service to coincide with the market launch of the ID. family: With We Charge, customers will be able to charge their electric vehicles at over 150,000 public charging points all over Europe. The We Charge charging card gives them easy access to these charging points. Customers have a choice of three individual tariffs with features such as exclusive conditions for the IONITY high-power charging network. We Charge can be booked and used from mid-August. Volkswagen is thus rounding off its “charging ecosystem” that makes charging electric vehicles as convenient as possible.

The We Charge Free basic tariff does not have a monthly fee. It essentially provides access to charging via a single charging card – and is best suited to drivers who only rarely use public charging points to charge their electric cars. We Charge Go offers lower prices for individual charging processes and is the right choice for regular users of public charging points. We Charge Plus is the tariff for all frequent drivers. For example, they only pay 30 eurocent per kilowatt-hour for IONITY in Germany and can therefore use the pan-European high-power charging network at a very attractive price.

JEEP RENEGADE 4XE PLUG-IN GYBRID GOES ON SALE IN EUROPE

With its most recent step into the world of electrification, the Jeep plug-in hybrid propulsion solution is capable of enhancing the legendary off-road capability of its line-up of SUVs, starting with the Renegade 4xe plug-in hybrid.

The Jeep Renegade 4xe pairs a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor, located between the rear axle, which is powered by an 11.4 kWh battery that can be recharged while driving or through an external power outlet or charge point. On its own, the efficient 1.3-litre turbo engine delivers a power output of 130hp or 180hp, plus the 60hp produced by the electric motor, giving a total of 190hp in the Longitude and Limited version or 240hp in the Trailhawk model.

with acceleration from zero to 62mph in around 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 81mph in full electric and up to 124mph in hybrid mode.

The Jeep Renegade 4xe arrives in showrooms in the UK in September priced from £32,600 OTR for a Jeep Renegade 4xe Longitude.
