Show #948

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 11th December. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Welcome to two new Patreon supporters. A new PRODUCER TYLER VOSS and a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER NATHANIEL FREEDMAN.

VOLKSWAGEN CLAIMS TO HAVE SOLVED ID.3 SOFTWARE ISSUES

"Volkswagen has overcome the software issues it once faced with the ID.3’s MEB platform, which delayed the launch of the all-electric hatchback.   Owners who took delivery of the ID.3’s first builds had to return their vehicles to their dealer for software updates once the issues were fixed." says Teslarati: "VW says that its engineers have fixed the glitches that were present in the first builds of the ID.3, which came from the company’s Zwickau factory that was converted to build EVs based on the MEB architecture. In an interview with Automotive News Europe, the company stated that it will now aim to update the first builds of the ID.3, which Volkswagen has labeled the “First Movers Club,” by the end of the year. It will require the car to be surrendered for at least one night and will be a lengthy process to complete."

OPTIMAL-EV TO DELIVER 200 E1 CHASSIS BASED ON FORD’S E450 CUTAWAY

"Optimal Electric Vehicles (Optimal-EV) announced a significant initial order for 200 battery-electric E1 chassis that will be used by Olathe Ford, one of the nation’s largest Ford Commercial Vehicle Centers." according to InsideEVs: "The E1 is based on Ford’s E450 cutaway chassis platform, which means that it could be easily adapted to a variety of vehicles, including school buses, commercial trucks and buses, ambulance, recreational vehicles, and fleet trucks. The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is 14,500 pounds (6,577 kg). Optimal-EV is equipping the E1 with Proterra's 113 kWh battery system, which should provide more than 125 miles (200 km) of range on a single charge. The optional DC charging option allows it to recharge in around two hours."

I just had a look at the Ford US website and the E-Series cutaway would normally come with...7.3L V8.

LORDSTOWN THRASHES THE SKATEBOARD FOR ITS ENDURANCE

"Skateboard platforms are becoming a common go-to for startup electric vehicle makers, as they’re essentially self-contained—packaging most of the core mechanical and propulsion components together in a “rolling chassis.” That building block, with a little modification, can be tested on its own—which is what Lordstown Motors recently did for the basis of its upcoming Endurance electric pickup, near its Ohio headquarters, with CEO Steve Burns behind the wheel." says Green Car Reports: "In a series of extreme environments, the video released by Lordstown (below) shows the Endurance platform being pushed through a proving-grounds torture test that presses the suspension and hub motors by shaking them around, submerging them in water, and churning through some snow and mud. Otherwise the platform will have a battery filled with 2170-format cylindrical batteries—the same size Tesla is using for the Model 3 and Model Y. "

TESLA (TSLA) COMPLETES $5BN STOCK SALE IN ONE DAY

" After disclosing its intention to raise $5 billion cash through a common stock offering on Tuesday, Tesla has announced it has completed the sale in just 24 hours. With just a few weeks left to go in the year, the large cash infusion gives Tesla a very healthy bank statement with approximately $20 billion cash on hand" says Drive TEsla Canada: "What exactly will CEO Elon Musk do with all that cash? It is no secret the automaker has major expansion plans, with two Gigafactories under construction in Berlin, Germany and Austin, Texas."

EU MINISTERS GREENLIGHT 50% TOLL DISCOUNT FOR EMISSIONS-FREE TRUCKS

"Hauliers driving emissions-free trucks will get at least half off road tolls in the European Union (EU) under a new tolling system given the go-ahead by transport ministers.Fossil-fuel trucks will be charged based on their CO2 emissions, with more efficient heavy-goods vehicles paying less. According to green campaign group Transport & Environment, if agreed by the EU parliament, the new Eurovignette law will speed up the transition to zero-emissions freight and help alleviate air pollution in cities." according to CittiMagazine.co.uk: "EU transport ministers said zero-emission trucks, which are electrified or run on hydrogen, would get at least a 50% discount on charges by April 2023. EU member states can give discounts of up to 100% for zero-emissions lorries, as is currently the case in Germany, until the end of 2025. After 2025, countries can offer discounts of between 50% and 75%, as is currently the case in Austria."

FRANCE INTRODUCES USED EV SUBSIDIES

"In France, the government subsidy of 1,000 euros specifically for the purchase of used purely electric cars announced in October has now come into force. In addition, the government has extended the environmental bonus and the conversion premium in their current amounts until June 2021." writes electrive: "First, regarding the new subsidy for used electric cars: the subsidy is granted for the purchase or lease of passenger cars or light commercial vehicles that are at least two years old and have CO2 emissions of no more than 20 grams CO2/km – in other words, de facto only for pure battery and hydrogen vehicles. The support of a lump sum of 1,000 euros can be combined with the “prime à la conversion,” which subsidizes the purchase of a new or used electric car or plug-in hybrid with up to 5,000 euros when the old combustion engine is decommissioned."

VAUXHALL OFFERS NEW CORSA-E BUYERS A FREE HOME CHARGER AND 30,000 FREE GREEN MILES

Vauxhall is offering new Corsa-e customers a free Home Charging Unit and 30,000 miles of free electricity for a limited time only, in partnership with British Gas.

The offer gives access to an exclusive British Gas Dual Fuel Tariff, with Vauxhall crediting each customer’s account to cover the cost of charging for the equivalent of 30,000 miles over a three-year period.

Powered by a 50kWh lithium-ion battery, the Corsa-e comes with a zero-emissions range of up to 209 miles from a single charge and supports up to 100kW rapid charging technology – allowing for an 80 per cent charge in as little as 30 minutes.

TESLA OFFERS ONE YEAR OF FREE SUPERCHARGING

"Electrek has learned that Tesla is now offering one year of free Supercharging to incentivize deliveries by the end of the year as it attempts another record quarter. Yesterday, we reported on Elon Musk writing in an email to employees that Tesla is seeing strong demand, but the automaker needs to increase production fast in order to deliver on expectations." writes Electrek today:" The automaker needs to deliver more than 181,000 vehicles this quarter in order to achieve this goal. That’s more than 40,000 vehicles over its last quarterly delivery record. Now we learn that despite Tesla apparently seeing strong demand, the automaker added a new incentive for buyers. Electrek has learned that Tesla authorized today its sale staff in North America to give one year of free unlimited Supercharging for undelivered Model 3 and Model Y vehicles."
