Unlike your kids or your dogs, when you call them, they come! I am talking about the 1000+ men and women who make up the Anne Arundel County Fire Department! After all, they see some pretty horrid things in the course of their duty! Today, we speak with Joe Addivinola, the long-time President of IAFF Local 1563, to see how the union plays a role. A kid hustled in college selling pizzas. Once out of school, he opened up an ice cream shop. And then a deli, and then a full-service restaurant, and today Alex Smith, the founder and CEO of , owns more than fifty locations across five states! Of course, Annapolitans are most familiar with The Choptank! With the expansion of their footprint in Annapolis, with two restaurants in the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel expected to open this fall (Armada and Marmo), and The Admiral's Cup in the former Stevens Hardware building scheduled to open in a few weeks, we wanted to chat and learn a bit more about...
info_outlineWhen the ospreys return, it is a sure sign that spring has sprung. Another sign is the return of the Bay Bridge Boat Show and the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show. While not as large as their older siblings in the fall, these two shows are a great way to make sure you are ready to get on the water this summer!
The crews are moving full steam ahead to prepare for this year's Bay Bridge Boat Show which moved slightly east to Safe Harbor Narrows Point Marina in Grasonville. More boats, more parking, more vendors and an entirely different experience awaits attendees. The gates open at 10am on Friday, April 1, 2025 and the show continues through Sunday April 13th.
And then two weeks later, they do it all again in Annapolis for the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show from April 25th through 27th. And like the Bay Bridge Boat Show, the Annapolis show will have plenty of boats, vendors, food, and fun for everyone!
The other day, we hopped over to Forward Brewing in Eastport to catch up with Mary Ewenson, one of the show's owners, to see what was new and exciting. Construction on both sides of the Bay has necessitated a pivot—one for location and the other for how they arrange the floating city!
We chatted about the training opportunities, the vendors, the boats (there will be an 80-foot beauty in Annapolis, along with some foiling sailboats for those who like to zoom), and the experience, which has been going strong for over fifty years!
What excites me the most is the camaraderie of the boating community and the opportunity to learn from the experts. Both shows feature some version of "drive before you buy," in case you are not sure-- at the Bay Bridge Boat Show, there is the Prop Talk Demo Dock, and at the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show, there is the Learn to Sail Workshop. No matter how involved (or not) you are with boating, there is something for everyone!
You can get your tickets to the show in advance (Bay Bridge Boat Show - Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show), but for now, have a listen!
