In Equal Rites, Drum Billet the wizard knows that he is dying and wishes to bequeath his power to someone. He arrives in the Lancre village of Bad Ass right before the birth of a new wizard, the eighth son of an eighth son. He gives up his power, not realizing that the infant, Eskarina Smith, is a girl, and he dies before he can fix his mistake. Everyone on the Disc knows that magic falls along gender lines: women are witches and men are wizards. But Drum Billet's wizard staff recognizes Esk as a wizard when she is eight years old, and she needs to find a teacher before her uncontrollable power attracts the attention of monsters from the Dungeon Dimensions.
