Body:
- Let's Face Reality
- Quotes from St. John Vianney:
- "To sustain the soul in the pilgrimage of life, God looked over creation, and found nothing that was worthy of it. He then turned to Himself, and resolved to give Himself. O my soul, how great thou art, since nothing less than God can satisfy thee!” (The Little Catechism of the Cure D'Ars, 43)
- “How happy are the pure souls that have the happiness of being united to Our Lord by Communion! They will shine like beautiful diamonds in Heaven, because God will be seen in them.” (Catechism, 43)
- My personal favorite: “When we leave the holy banquet, we are as happy as the Wise Men would have been, if they could have carried away the Infant Jesus.” (Catechism, 44)
- “There is nothing so great, my children, as the Eucharist! Put all the good works in the world against one good Communion; they will be like a grain of dust beside a mountain.” (Catechism, 46)
- “O my children, how beautiful will a soul be in eternity that has worthily and often received the good God!” (Catechism, 47)
- How Bad are Bad Communions?
- The Worthy Reception of Holy Communion
Conclusion:
- Closing quote: "O my children, how beautiful will a soul be in eternity that has worthily and often received the good God! The Body of Our Lord will shine through our body, His adorable Blood through our blood; our soul will be united to the Soul of Our Lord during all eternity. There it will enjoy pure and perfect happiness. My children, when the soul of a Christian who has received Our Lord enters paradise, it augments the joy of Heaven. The Angels and the Queen of Angles come to meet it, because they recognize the Son of God is that soul." (Catechism, 47).
Resources:
As I said in the homily, I am a big fan of St. John Vianney (1786-1859) the patron saint of parish priests. There is more material available in his native French, but I don't read French. Here are the four English books I own:
- Thoughts of the Cure D'Ars. This is one of my favorite books, period. It is a little three dollar book full of brief quotes from St. John Vianney.
- The Little Catechism of The Cure of Ars. This is an absolute gem. It really highlights his simple, yet profound way of teaching his people the faith. All the quotes from today's homily can be found in this book.
- The Cure of Ars and the Holy Eucharist. Wereas the Little Catechism takes his best stuff on each topic, this is basically all his material on the Eucharist. (This book is out of print, so if you can find it, prices can vary considerably).
- Sermons of the Cure of Ars. This is a very interesting read. It is my understanding that all these sermons are from his earlier days, because at some point in his priesthood he stopped writing his homilies out.
