Legalism is a common term for this problem, and it all boils down to where you place your trust - the words of men or the words of God. Too many people today are hung up on following rules and denying themselves the good things of life in order to show God how Godly they are.

Today we’ll move on in our verse by verse study through Colossians as we begin a look at chapter two, verses eleven through fifteen. Here we see some very important admonitions from Paul about the difference between law and grace, and becoming a new creation in Christ, and thus showing the world the difference the Lord makes in our lives.
