In this episode, I talk with Michelle Niemeyer—speaker, coach, and former attorney—about how high achievers can work with their energy instead of against it. After more than 30 years in law, running her own firm, and serving in public office, Michelle faced a rare autoimmune diagnosis that forced her to slow down and rethink everything about success, productivity, and well-being. That turning point led her to create The Art of Bending Time, a framework that helps professionals stay sharp and successful without sacrificing their health or joy. Michelle now helps leaders and teams prevent...

info_outlineThis week, we examine why many high-achieving women tie their self-worth to their professional achievements. Work offers a sense of control, validation, and instant gratification that can feel more manageable than the uncertainty of relationships, personal growth, or other areas of life. Over time, this reliance on work for self-esteem can turn into a coping mechanism, leaving women caught in a cycle of overworking to feel competent and valued.
This pattern creates a range of challenges, from struggling to be present with loved ones to constantly chasing the next accomplishment without ever feeling truly fulfilled. It can also amplify harsh self-criticism, making even minor setbacks at work feel like personal failures. As work takes up more mental and emotional space, many women find themselves disconnected from who they are outside of their careers, unsure of what brings them joy or purpose beyond their professional identity.
Breaking this cycle isn’t about giving up ambition—it’s about expanding the definition of success to include health, relationships, and personal fulfillment. By setting healthy boundaries, redefining self-worth, and embracing the discomfort of growth outside of work, women can begin to reclaim their sense of self. With support, self-reflection, and intentional action, it’s possible to build a life where worth isn’t tied to productivity, but to the whole, multifaceted person you are.
