Bats

All of us know at least one scary bat story.

One reason they show up in so many ghost stories is that they’re nocturnal, they hunt and fly in the dark, so on the rare occasions when we do see them, they seem to emerge from the heart of the night. But that’s just a bad reputation for this generally gentle animal.

1,000 species of bats

Most of the nearly 1,000 species of bats worldwide use echolocation for food gathering and navigation, which basically means that instead of seeing where they’re going, as humans do, they hear where they’re going. Bats are nearly blind (hence the phrase, "Blind as a bat,"), but they have extraordinary hearing; they make sounds, and from the way that those sounds bounce back to them, they can tell what’s around them and how far away it is.

What Do You Know, Joe?

A microbat, like the hollow-nosed bat, for instance, will give birth to a pup that is about 25% of her body size. Why are the babies so large?

A. Pups will be able to hold onto the cave ceiling easier
B. Pups will be teens and they won't have to worry about "diaper days"
C. Pups will already be able to fly
D. Pups will be weaned faster

Last Posts Answer: B. Johnny Five confounded scientists repeatedly throughout the movie, all of whom assumed that his adaptable behaviour was the result of highly sophisticated programming, and nothing more. He was ultimately determined to be alive due to his grasp of abstract concepts, such as art and humor (and was granted US Citizenship at the end of the sequel). He was voiced by Tim Blaney, whose most recognizable other character was Frank, the dog from the 'Men in Black' movies
