Justice Worriers podcast
Andy reads a prayer he wrote in 2023 that concludes with a request for us to learn companionship with people considered beneath contempt, to learn with and from people who are different and make us uncomfortable. As may be a familiar feeling now, there was a lot of war happening in the world at the time, and the prayer starts with lots of asking for peace and reconciliation. Andy, Leah and Jörg talk to Bethany, whose personal encounters in Palestine and Israel led to academic study, giving her a rare depth of insight which she brings to her introduction to the history of the devastating conflict in this region. The group tries to engage with how to respond as people who are collectively implicated in the mistakes of the past and largely powerless as individuals in the present. This is part 2 of the conversation. Apologies for the background noise of traffic and aeroplanes. You can find Bethany's research about the encounters between volunteers and Palestinians at...

Andy, Leah and Jörg discuss AI: its utility, ethical problems and potential to change how we see ourselves and God. By building machines that reflect the totality of human knowledge and dress themselves up as truth machines, are we building idols? Does all this text cheapen our communication? Andy, Jörg and Leah talk through our response to preparations for war, where the only people calling for peace seem to be doing it insincerely. How can we respond to Jesus' words about turning the other cheek and loving our enemies when we feel the need to be protected? Do we abandon these ideas as irrelevant? Andy, Leah and Jörg talk to Shamilka about her faith journey, especially the importance of her experiences at the Soul Survivor festival, and the impact of finding out about the scandal surrounding its leader, Mike Pilavachi. She describes how as a teenager she longed for a sign of God's acceptance, and Soul Survivor provided some chance for that, and then how that was thrown into confusion when its integrity was destroyed.
Why do we look to hero figures to live our faith for us?
Can we take good things from youthful experiences, even when we have re-evaluated them later in life?
Obviously people who abuse their power should be stopped and held accountable. How do we construct churches and societies that prevent power from being concentrated in the first place? Do our ideas about God lead us towards lack of accountability and concentration of power?
