A Champion of Socially Conscious Investing and Entrepreneurship

Mike Clare is a serial entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist. He is best known for founding Dreams, a UK-based, bedroom furniture and bedding company. Purpose-driven, his aim has always been to give back to the community and make local impacts. Clare set up his own charity, The Clare Foundation, to help other charities through interest-free loans. He is now an inspirational speaker, mentoring students and other entrepreneurs throughout the country.

*My Key Takeaways*

Mike has been a hugely successful person with regards to his business and I can tell through our conversation this too has transpired into his personal life. In short, his success has been built on hard work, honesty and communication. This is what he shares in many different ways throughout our time together.

What Mike is passionate about and I know this can be a controversial topic when it comes to the charity sector, is how effective a business approach is when running a not for profit. He explains in detail why, in his opinion, this works. For me, what he says makes absolute logical sense.

The tool that Mike has found to be the most successful throughout his business and charity work is definitely communication, every time. Whether its employees, partners, beneficiaries or donors, he has a strong belief that without this, success simply will not be the result. He is very passionate about this piece and can‘t seem to stress it enough.

He uses a great analogy about a train and where different people, within what we’re trying to achieve, sit. My time with mike reminded me that although it's never that simplistic, it is true that there are a few simple rules for us to follow when we’re set on growing something and although different things come into play, those rules, our points of reference that keep us on track, they’re invaluable.

What are your points of reference that let you know you’re where you want to be? What’s unique about what you’re doing? Who’s on your train and what are they doing there? Much food for thought!
