2412 - Socialist Challenges Eric Adams; Oregon Nurses Strike w/ Zohran Mamdani

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Zohran Mamdani, State Assemblyman for New York's 36th District & candidate for Mayor, to discuss his candidacy. Then, he speaks with 2 members of the Oregon Nurses Association: Rebekah Van Dyke, union steward & strike captain, & Christie Sowards, member of the bargaining team involved in negotiations with Providence Health Systems in Oregon. Providence nurses at 8 Oregon hospitals are currently on strike. First, Sam runs through updates on Trump’s cabinet hearings, the imminent Gaza ceasefire deal, the CFPB’s case against Capital One, the SEC’s case against Elon Musk, the EPA Red Dye #3 ban, Trump’s plan to hide his tariff’s impact, the Lincoln Riley Act, the House’s passage of an anti-trans school sports bill, Justice Democrats’ primary plan, gas pricing, LA’s crisis, and Texas’ anti-porn law, before diving a little deeper into the defenses and attacks of Trump’s Defense Secretary nomination Pete Hegseth. Zohran Mamdani then joins, diving right into his history in progressive organizing spaces after joining the DSA in 2017, working on a city council campaign, as a housing counselor, and helping the NY Taxi Workers’ Alliance fight for reparations over the city’s Medallion bait-and-switch. Next, Mamdani walks through his campaign’s central policies, including launching a rent freeze on day 1 of his administration, pushing for a free bus program, and revolutionizing the city’s childcare policies, before he and Sam briefly shift to the overwhelming success of the city’s recently launched congestion pricing. Wrapping up, Zohran makes a final pitch to voters and unpacks what we can do to help his campaign. Rebekah Van Dyke and Christie Sowards then join as they walk Sam through the expansive network of nurses, doctors, and clinicians striking under the Oregon Nurses Association in the face of Providence Health & Services’ failure to manage a life-saving workforce, providing low wages and minimal benefits to a short-staffed workforce with the massive impact passed onto patients. After expanding on Providence’s role in fanning this flame by refusing to bargain, Van Dyke and Sowards unpack the unfortunate necessity of striking in the face of unfair labor practices, and what to look for as this action continues.
