When you encounter the word “overwhelm,” what are the things that immediately come to your mind?  Your kids? Work? Or the stream of news about COVID-19? What if I told you that overwhelm isn’t caused by something external to you?

You see, as a recovering people-pleaser, I used to get overwhelmed whenever someone made a request; I didn’t have the fortitude to say no. But once I understood that I could decline, agree, or renegotiate a request, I realized that it wasn’t these people asking for my time that caused my overwhelm.

In this episode, I discuss what’s causing overwhelm in our lives—and how you can manage them. I describe how being a people-pleaser used to cause me so much stress and anxiety, and highlight the relationship between fear and overwhelm. I also underscore the importance of thinking about how we relate with and see the world and share some tools and practices that can help you manage stress and overwhelm.

“You get overwhelmed not because you’re not good at time management, but because you outsize the consequences of all the things you’re supposed to do.” - Mark Silverman
